Do you ever think about how Aang had so many friends all over the world, but he was the first ever friend of anyone in the gaang? Katara and Sokka lived in a village consisting of maybe fifty people and all of them were either much older or younger than them. Toph’s parents tried to keep her away from the outside world and she never had an actual friend. Zuko was also never shown to have friends and was a 13 year-old child when he was banished. All these kids were living in isolation and Aang was the first person to befriend them.

We don’t really think about it a lot, but while these kids are making their first friends and seeing the world for the first time, you have to expect that there’s this big part of Aang that still expects all his old friends to be there wherever they travel. Like he thought people were still going to be there at the air temples and had to reconcile with the fact that all the kids he grew up with are now long dead and gone. He might have never found out what happened to Kuzon, if his childhood friend got caught up in Sozin’s propaganda and the war. He sees Bumi and he’s this old man who’s lived an entire life and is now running a city. While Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko are all finding themselves in this new form of family and are experiencing these bonds for the first time, Aang is technically replacing all his old friends because they’re all gone. Aang might be well traveled and sociable, but the world he wakes up in would be lonely and alienating without the help of his friends who grew up in it. He needs these people just as much as they need him because without their support and love, he’s kind of lost in this unfamiliar world.
