This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Schooling behavior among fish and birds; efficient computer networks; biofilms; cooperation in an ant colony; unmanaged development in cities; a common thread runs through all of these. Each is best described as a complex system. A complex system is not complicated. Each actor, or "agent," in the system behaves according to a few simple rules. Even though no agent understands the system writ large, undeniable patterns emerge from the system. As we learn to describe this emergence mathematically, in terms of entropy, stability, and far-from-equilibrium dynamics, we will better understand systems like markets, ecologies, and life itself.

His topic: (back by popular demand) Save the Urchin Fishery With This One Weird Trick! The failing Sea Urchin fishery has left Maine struggling to recover its sea urchin population. Over the years, this precious resource has been exhausted, but it's not simply a matter of overfishing. Graham Morehead here talks of a possible solution to this concern. He was invited to TEDxYouth@Biddeford to give a talk about sea urchins to high school students raising awareness among them about this resource and sustainability in general.

The unitaryness of consciousness is an illusion. That my consciousness feels singular is merely a manageable fiction. The prefrontal cortex demands it thus. The neocortex lives by the assumption that “me” is one thing. Planning cannot exist without identity. Identity cannot exist without disambiguation — the ability to discern that which is me, from that which is not me.

As a human, I share more with octopus consciousness than I’d prefer to believe. The neurons of a highly evolved cephalopod are not concentrated in the brain like ours. They do have brains, but two thirds of their neurons are in the arms. Complex motor skills are not organized in their brain using an internal somatotopic map of the body. Instead, octopus arms show a variety of complex behaviors even in the absence of input from the brain.

Graham talked about his academic challenges and career pit stops mentioning 3 significant mentors who taught him important life lessons. His talk also tackled about how man's exploration made the world a better place. He ended his talk by challenging the listeners to do more of what they are required to do, quoting from him: "Humanity is waking up, be a part of it."

Curator of The Pangeon and IT Manager for R.H. Foster Graham Morehead came by the TideSmart Talk with Stevoe studio to discuss sea urchins, voice recognition and deep thoughts. Morehead also told Stevoe all about his newest project, a blogging site called Pangeon, and how he came up with the name and its meaning.
