Amycus shook his head, not knowing the answer; but he did not want his uncertainty to suffocate her. Minutes, hours – Amycus assumed the latter, but the longer he pondered their circumstances, the less time they had. His fingers twitched around hers without meaning to.
“The protective charms will hold us until daybreak, if necessary. The barriers will alert us to intruders,” he nodded. That much he was certain, but he knew they had to get out. The faster, the better. “The marshes around the grounds have flooded over for the night. It’d take one hell of an effort to get through without magic. And we would know the moment they stepped foot upon our land.”
His chest felt tighter than before. Uncertainty was not something that sat well with him, not with Alecto and their child in the mix. But they would overcome this. They would escape this chaos. He would make sure of it.
“We’re going to be fine, okay? They’re not going to get us. Never. We will never be theirs to have.” Amycus nodded, reassuringly. “I prepared for this. We have a plan. Everything is laid out for us,” he said. “I took the liberty of packing anything we would need. I sent a couple of elves through already.” He kept a protective gaze upon Alecto. “This is our new beginning, love. We are going to be far, far away from this. You, me, and our family.”
If Amycus was certain of anything, it was that they would survive this. Together. He would take all the burden upon himself to ensure their safety. Perhaps, he pondered, this was a blessing in disguise.
Amycus kissed Alecto once again, deeply, with every ounce of love he had within himself. Pulling away, finally, he stood. “Get dressed. Gather everything you think you will need. Once I get you through the threshold, I want you to stay there until I come through. You will be safe there.” His expression turned very serious. “I’m going to burn it down. All of it. And rid us of this burden for good.”
