How to Connect with your Dolls!
I know this sounds weird, but have you ever looked at one of your dolls and just felt -nothing. And then you just put them away and think about selling them? So basically this happened with me and half of my dolls- so here's what I did!
Fix up your doll- If your doll is damaged (like how my Caroline was) fix them up! I used to not like Caroline because of her cut hair- so I rewigged her and now she's one of my favorites!
Read their book- If it's a historical or GOTY, read their book, I swear this works! I read my Julie's book for the first time and I instantly started to like her more!
Write a story for your dolls! This is what I do with my Truly Me dolls, since I usually struggle to connect with them.
Change your dolls outfit! Try to 'spend some time with them' and it should work!

Marisol’s Story and Trip to the Doll Hospital
Marisol Luna, Girl of the Year 2005, was my very first real American Girl doll. She was a Christmas gift from a family friend. I had wanted her, not only because she looked like me, but also because she and I also had many things in common. For example, we both come from Hispanic families and we are both dancers. I even kind of look like her! My family couldn’t afford her, so I was not able to get her until that Christmas. When I opened her, I was ecstatic to finally have my own American Girl doll!
Getting an American Girl doll at a young age was great, but it also meant that I didn’t take very good care of her. My eleven-year-old self thought it would be a brilliant idea to cut her hair. (I wish I could go back in time and tell myself, “DON’T DO IT! IT’S A TERRIBLE MISTAKE!”) So now, she’s sporting a triangle haircut. Due to being played with for so many years, her skin is also dirty. I’ve included pictures to show you the condition this poor girl is in. Now that I’m back into dolls, I think it’s time to fix her up.
When it came to fixing Marisol, I knew I had two options: I could either try to fix her up myself or send her to the Doll Hospital. Although I have never restored a doll before, I figured since her problems are minor (in other words, she doesn’t need anything too invasive like re-stringing or an eye replacement), I could try my hand at restoring her. She would need a re-wigging and a good skin cleaning. After thinking about it for a while, I decided to send her to the Doll Hospital instead. I can’t bear the possibility of ruining her head in an attempt to re-wig her. Plus, I couldn’t find a wig that I really loved for her (I admit, maybe I could have spent more time looking, I gave up after only a little while). So, to the Doll Hospital she goes! Please wish Marisol a speedy “recovery!”
My Life Has Been A Lie...
For as long as I can remember, I had always thought that Molly was my favorite American Girl historical character. I remember being a little girl and dreaming about having a Molly doll. That’s why I got her when I learned that AG had re-released her for their 35th anniversary. However, I learned something this weekend that made me realize how my life has been a lie...
Lately, my dad has been working on digitizing home movies of me when I little. He stumbled upon a video of me, at eight years old, talking about what I wanted for Christmas. Naturally, I said I wanted an American Girl doll. (Almost 20 years later and literally nothing has changed!) In the video, he asked me which American Girl doll was my favorite. I emphatically answered, “SAMANTHA!”... WHAT??? There was a time in my life when Samantha was my favorite doll? And there is video evidence of it!
I love Samantha, and would love to get her someday, but I didn’t remember that she had been my favorite at some point. Anyway, I thought you all would enjoy hearing this story!
thinking about american girl again and how samantha parkington has the most unhinged 9 year old girl vibes..... she meets nellie for like 3 seconds and she's like 'we are best friends. eat this gingerbread. it is now my job to feed and entertain and teach and clothe you.' nellie doesn't even do or say much, she's just there and not a terrible person. all you have to do is not be a jackass and sam will go so hard for you. and if you are a jackass she WILL stick gum in your hair and you won't even tell on her to your mom cuz you know if the two of you are questioned she will completely eviscerate you. like imagine being miss parkington's classmate at school and she rolls up to The Big Fancy School Speech Competition wearing some pink and white number with like 97 ruffles and bows on it and then she stands up at the podium and goes 'i couldn't write a speech on the provided topic, which was progress in america, because my best friend is a literal child the same age as me and there are no laws preventing her labour from being exploited for capitalist gain, from which i must conclude america has not progressed. thank you and goodnight, parkington out' and she still wins!! unreal

Getting Back Into American Girl
Ever since elementary school, I have loved American Girl dolls. Like most AG fans, I discovered American Girl at my school's library, when I stumbled upon their historical characters’ book series. After I finished reading Molly’s books, I subscribed to their monthly catalog, and the rest is history.
Needless to say, it's been many years since then. Seven dolls and a high school diploma later, I thought I was ready to leave American Girl behind. Of course, I cherished my dolls and my memories with them. But as I was preparing to graduate, I didn't have time for dolls anymore. My interests were changing as I was growing into a college-aged young woman.
However, this all changed a couple of weeks ago.
Somehow (I'm not sure how, but thinking back on it, I'm pretty sure it was through an ad), I learned that, in celebration of their 35th anniversary, American Girl would be making a few of their retired dolls available for sale again! This caught my attention because there was one specific retired doll that I had always wanted to get: Molly. Molly had been my favorite AG historical character. But for some reason, I had never gotten the chance to buy her. (Probably because my parents said I already owned too many AG dolls!) A few years ago, when I learned that she was retired, I was disappointed that I had never gotten her. But with this special 35th anniversary sales event, I would finally have the chance to get her!
I wondered if buying her would be a waste of money, since she was priced at $150. In my day, dolls were $95. I gave myself a day to consider it, and I decided to go for it. (The beauty of being an adult collector is that your parents can’t tell you “no” anymore!) Now, I have a beautiful Molly doll!
