I’ve noticed with my redesigns made after zoro’s that they’re much less detail heavy. Cause yeah I wanna be able to communicate a lot of things with their looks, but it’s ok to not be able to do that with just one outfit. These characters literally wear multiple sets of clothes on the regular idk why I was trying to cram so much into one and limiting myself so heavily

Anyways!! Back to the main focus!! What I originally wanted to communicate with Usopp’s clothing when I first planned it and what is left in the final product is still mostly the same: bug-like accents in reference to Heracles and viking-like accessories to represent both his dream to be a great warrior of the sea and his admiration of giants.

The fur on his boots and as the belt thing are supposed to be reminiscent of the hair under the shells of hercules beetles, but are also modeled after Dorry’s clothes! The boots also have a camel toe cause that’s just the closest I could think of to beetles’ hooked feet. Broggy wears a brooch on his cape, so I included lots of circular hardware on Usopp’s clothes too.

I wanted to add a pauldron (shoulder armor), I even considered just a leather one instead of a metal one, but I discarded the more costumed feel of the original draft. There was also a long scarf instead of a bandana, as kinda a reference to sogeking. But the thing is he has matured past the need for a persona. So now I feel like I inadvertently added a kind of gardener or mechanic type of look, which feels much more down to earth and authentic to Usopp.

His belt has loops to hold dispensers for his pop greens, based off these handheld gum dispensers I saw one time. His pouches probably hold small tools or extra slingshot string incase kuro kabuto breaks. His goggles also now have a 2-in-1 function! They’re both ear muffs/protectors and goggles; the headband part can flip down to cover the eyes. They have antennas, but that’s just to look like beetle mandibles. Maybe the muffs could be dials for radio/comms tho :O

One thing I included that I’m very proud of is kyudo/japanese archery gloves!! I got the idea when thinking abt how Usopp’s wano disguise (the kimono & hakama) is also kinda just the same garb used as archery uniforms. Mitsugake (the 3 fingered glove) is used to help with grip when drawing back your bow, or in this case his slingshot! Ik he doesn’t really need the oshidegake with the type of projectiles he’s using, since pop greens are small and not gonna risk hitting his thumb, but it still looks cool and that’s what matters 🙂‍↕️

His body type is like he’s got muscular arms and back for yk drawing his slingshot, but there’s still a good layer of fat on him. I have a fullbody reference with no clothes on him but idk if tumblr would obliterate my post… Cause I want to point out he also specifically has developed the more like body building/aesthetic muscles on his chest/torso cause he wants to look cool lol
