It’s amazing to think that just a few weeks ago we were living in much simpler times. A gathering of mothers and their babies is not even safe in this present reality! On November 1st, 2019 at 6:11 pm we welcomed Asha Moon Alsultany in to the world. After 44 hours of labor, she came in at 6 lbs 8 oz, 20 inches long at Saint John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, CA. We’ve been nesting at home and bonding with our little girl. Eva did great and is recovering well. Little Asha has stolen our hearts, we are so happy! This sonic time capsule provides a musical photograph of what’s happening around me. Over the last two weeks, I saw Massive Attack with @derekberes and @callanberes , and Prophets of Rage with @abedhat and his wife Nina. This week it’s Kamasi Washington with My wife @eva.believa (this will be our third time seeing him) and I’ll go with @rafepearlman to see relatively new artist Tamino (who sounds a lot of like Jeff Buckley). Eva and I are LOVING the new Jideanna song ‘Sufi Woman’, new Sudan Archives “Confessions” and the new Midival Punditz single “Nukhta". Blown away by the Baloji video for “Peau de Chagrin - Bleu de Nuit”. And I’m saddened by the recent deaths the lead singer of The Cars, Rick Ocasek and singer Eddie Money, their music, especially the music of The Cars played a huge role in my musical upbringing. I remember owning a copy of their debut album “The Cars” when I was seven years old!. And Eddie, well, “Baby Hold On To Me” has been one of my favorites forever. Massive Attack Live. Deep. Dark. Massive sound. Powerful visuals reminding us of the state of the world and its variety of deeply seeded corruption around the plant. The show instilled feelings agitation. The band are a group of fifty somethings who are still punk at heart. Their message is stronger live than on record. This was one of those shows that was much more than the music. The show was an artistic statement. As a group of live musicians, they reinterpreted the music and absolutely crushed it. Mind blown. The Roots celebrated the 20th anniversary of their groundbreaking album Things Fall Apart, one of the most influential albums in hip hop history. I spent my birthday with some of my favorite people in the world, and got to fly the #MillenniumFalcon!
