He loved and loves his sons imo but clearly struggles with his own emotions and trauma and this made him neglectful towards his sons. I think he's scared of losing his children because after his wife's death he feels powerless and unable to protect his family. All Rengoku children are raised with expectation on their shoulders it seems? So he verbally attacks his sons hoping they would give that legacy up imo. Clearly this doesn't work and I would argue this actually had the exact results he wanted to avoid because it seems part of why Kyojuro became a slayer was to please his father, not the only or most important reason but it did encourage him? Senjuro wants to please him too. He struggles with his anger and it causes him to become physically violent in heat of the moments, we see it happen 1 time if I recall correctly. When he hit Senjuro. We can argue because neither of his sons are afraid of him especially Senjuro, since he's younger so he probably doesn't remember much of the good times, that it only happened 1 time. Still it was abusive. He insulted Rengoku after his death but I think it's easier to blame his dead son than acknowledge that maybe if he tried to teach his child he wouldn't be dead or even if he still died then Shinjuro at least had tried then (kyojuro learned by himself, he's very capable. But I think Shinjuro would blame himself for not teaching him deep down, and it was Shinjuro's responsibility too actually). Blaming Kyojuro is easier than acknowledging that he can't make things better or apologize to his eldest son. And I think deep down he knew that too. Still he managed to change for the better and actually acknowledge his wrongs and apologized to those he could. Making a better like for his remaining son.

I think he's an example of someone loving so much and being afraid to lose that they hurt their loved ones. So ready to crush anything that they think might take their loved ones away, even if it means they have to try crush dreams and decisions .So tangled in their own fear and emotions that they forget to appreciate and actually show their love until it's too late and they learn the hard way.

Idk, I don't think he was the worst but definitely wasn't good either. He's complex in ways that makes it hard for me to come to a conclusion about him.

(The other character who makes me feel the same way is Sanemi, while him and Shinjuro aren't the same, I think they have some similarities and parallels. Especially how they struggle with anger towards themselves and how their fear ruined their chances with loved ones.)

Sorry my rant got long, I wanted to know your opinion on Shinjuro (+ his relationship with his children)

I mean there isn't much more i could add to your analysis since it's comprehensive and it paints a good picture of who shinjuro is as a person and a father. I like shinjuro as a character very much, he represents the theme of "redemption and forgiveness" in kny very well. just like all other characters he isn't a monster or a perfect being. he is a person who made mistakes out of desperation and heartbreak. that doesn't mean those mistakes and flaws however unintentional they're, had no effect on others. kyojuro suffered greatly. after all he was a little boy when he lost his mom and he needed his dad to be there for him. senjuro also suffered at the hands of his dad.

the thing i love about kny though is presented with the choice to make shinjuro into an antagonistic force till the end, or allow him a chance to try and mend his wounds and move on the narrative choses the later. life is a very difficult journey but love can be such a powerful thing whether it breaks us or gives us a reason to continue. while i grief for kyojuro who lost both of his parents early on, my hope for shinjuro at least for the sake of senjuro is that he works on himself and tries to do a better job after the final battle.

So I was listening to music when I got to this song and this part made me think of Sanemi.

And then I thought "I can think of at least one person who may like it... At least I hope so. I will share it anyway, she can always say pass."

Regarding the children verse, I feel like Genya counts as his child in a sense.

I have a question to ask, why do you think Obanai saved Tanjiro in the last fight? Did he actually start to like him? Or is it respect?

I think he would have saved him even if he didn't like him because that's what as a demon slayers he would do and because they can't afford to just lose fighters in battle.

you're absolutely right it is a combination of all three. obanai is a hero after all and he'd save anyone who's in need of help. he is also smart and dedicated enough to put his petty grievances with tanjiro aside in order for them to fight against their common enemy (the same thing he did with giyu when he saved him as well)

I'd also like to believe that within their brief time interacting obanai managed to glean tanjiro's true nature. see before the final battle you could tell that obanai misread tanjiro or misunderstood him. tanjiro's optimism must've read as naivety to him and his affection towards a demon (a female demon at that) must've repulsed him. he also misread his friendliness with mitsuri as intrusion. they were at odds since the moment they met. obanai immediately judged both of the kamado siblings in the hashira trials and 'lost' which made him incurious and a bit resentful towards them

then the final battle happenes and obanai is forced to fight along and collaborate with tanjiro, and for the first time he sees him. he might still not like him or have a soft spot for him, and his words towards him might still be harsh. but being around him more allowed obanai to kind of understand that tanjiro is a truly selfless person. because of the suffering he endured at the hands of his selfish clan, and because of falsely believing himself to be a selfish person obanai greatly respects people who are selfless (that's why he's really fond of kyojuro, mitsuri and kagaya)

but it's more than that though, obanai also saw the potential of tanjiro as a comrade. because it was only them on the battle field for some time he was forced to collaborate with tanjiro instead of just swooping in to save him. they gave each other strength and had each other's backs. tanjiro showed a lot of grit and was very helpful. obanai's respect for him grew and his belief in him solidified. so it is a mix of all three
