one thing i really loved about “the shadows between us” is that is so unapologetically a pure female fantasy. the main character is a brooding, scheming noblewoman who attracts attention wherever she goes, can get pretty much any man she likes, is a machiavellian social climber, always looks fantastic, carries a knife and knows how to use it, and spends most of the book maneuvering the situation to achieve her own very selfish ends. she’s intelligent and very forward-thinking for her time period, allowing the audience to like her and want to see her succeed even as she does Objectively Bad Things. on the rare occasion someone does manage to get the drop on her, she manages to turn the situation around and make them wish they never looked at her sideways. and she has a sweeping, epic romance to top it all off.
