Remnant snippet from chapter one
They stared at each other for a beat too long before both burst out laughing again. The tension melted back into chaos – all noise, warmth, and booze.
“Right,” Harry said suddenly, squinting like he’d just remembered something important. “I’m getting another drink. You want one?”
Emery raised her cup. “Already got one.”
She nearly choked on her drink. “Lightweight? You’re the one who tried to-” she broke off, laughing too hard to finish, “-you tried to order pizza from the toaster!”
Harry blinked. “It looked like a phone!”
“It was glowing red, Harry… with bread in it!”
He pointed at her, swaying slightly. “That’s sexist or something.”
“That’s stupid,” she snorted, doubling over. “You even said, ‘Hello, Domino’s, large pepperoni,’ like it was gonna answer!”
Harry’s grin was so wide it nearly split his face. “Didn’t say it didn’t work.”
“Didn’t say you weren’t concussed.”
He wagged a finger at her. “You laugh now, but one day, all kitchen appliances will have phones in ‘em, and I’ll look like a genius.”
“You already look like someone who’s lost a fight with a microwave.”
Harry threw his head back laughing, nearly sloshing cider down his shirt. “That’s cold, Em. Real cold.”
“Then hang your head over the toaster again, see if it warms you up.”
He cackled, that big, unrestrained laugh that made her laugh too. It was stupid and loud but perfect. For a moment, they were just two idiots in a kitchen, pretending the world outside didn’t exist.
“Go get your drink before you burn the place down,” Emery said, still giggling.
Harry gave her a mock salute. “Yes, ma’am.”
He smirked. “You love it.”
She rolled her eyes, smiling despite herself. “You’re an embarrassment.”
“And you’re stuck with me,” he said, stumbling toward the crowd again.
Emery laughed under her breath and shook her head. The music was still loud, the lights still too bright, everything spinning in a way that felt almost magical.
