A smirk twitched across the girl’s lips. The lenses of her glasses seemed to give off a cruel, mischievous gleam. Ah, now that was more like it…
The small bird whispered up to his Keeper, “Don’t do it! She could beat you or pluck out your eyelashes or…” The Baroness’ eyes flickered in his direction. He gave a small gulp. “Don’t do it,” he repeated in a quieter voice.
Now the Baroness gazed at Jennifer, her arms folded over each other, her head titled to the side.
Deep inside her stomach was turning over and over at the decision she was making. Meg could be cruel enough without Jennifer needing to obey her every whim. Giving her more power than she already had was... frightening, to say the very least...
But Jennifer’s heart weighed more on her than her mind, and she would never ever forgive herself if this bird got hurt in her place.
“I’m sorry,” She whimpered, almost silently to the bird, before looking slowly up at Meg. “... Would that be okay, Meg?”

She extended her hand out, her palm facing upward. “Give it here,” she said, her voice smooth, callous.
The Beggar wanted to say no. She wanted to scream it, but... the girl was far too meek for that. But there was one thing she knew: she would be willing to die so long as it meant this little bird made it out alright. There was nothing he could have done to deserve what they did to him.
“I--I swear, I’ll do anything else you say, anything in the whole world,” She sputtered, grasping the little animal even closer. “But I have to keep the bird. Please, Meg, please.”
