The Bretton Woods system was a monetary system that was created in 1944 during the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, USA. The system was designed to establish the US as the world’s leading economy, and create a stable international monetary order after World War II. Before World War II, the United Kingdom held the position of having the world's leading economy and its currency, the British pound sterling, was the dominant reserve currency. The British Empire's extensive global trade network and financial influence contributed to this status. The Bretton Woods system created a fixed exchange rate system, where the value of all major international currencies was pegged to the US dollar, which was in turn pegged to gold at a fixed rate of $35 per ounce. At the end of WWII, the U.S. had 75% of the world's monetary physical gold, and the dollar was the only currency still backed directly by gold.
