Captain Americookies
You will need:
1 mixing bowl
2 smaller bowls
1 knife
baking sheet
rolling pin
plate that fits in your freezer
small star shaped cookie cutter (mine is about 2 inches; if you’re using a bigger one double the cookie recipe)
red and blue food coloring
2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1 stick unsalted butter
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4th teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
Cream together the sugar and butter. Stir in the egg and vanilla until fully combined. Add the dry ingredients and mix until the dough forms a solid mass.
Split your dough into six roughly equal balls. Flatten one and cut out the stars, brushing them with water to stack them together. Put that on the little plate and stick it in the freezer.
If there are any scraps left over from the stars, smush them into one of the balls. Put that in one of the bowls/your mixer and add blue food coloring; put two balls in another and add red. Keep those in the fridge until needed.
Take the stars out of the freezer; cut the blue dough into triangles that slightly overlap the points of the stars. Stick them to the stars, then gently roll it to get a proper circle. Put it longways up on the plate again and back into the freezer.
Roll out one of the white balls to approximately the same length as the log now in the freezer. Roll the log into it and cut off any overhanging edges. Back into the freezer it goes as you roll out a red ball.
Repeat this process with the other white and red dough; remember that your second set of each color needs to be slightly wider.
When it’s done, put the log in the fridge for half an hour.
Turn the oven to 325
Take out the log, set it down longways and slice it about half an inch thick, rolling it occasionally so it doesn’t go flat on one side. Put the slices on the baking sheet. I like to turn the bits of leftover dough into tie-dye cookies, as seen above.
Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until golden at the edges.
