what would Persephone do
divinity will stain your fingers and mouth like a pomegranate. it will swallow you whole and spit you out, wine-dark and wanting. you will reach for it again and again, greedy human fingers clutching at everything you can reach. the divine will curl its way through your veins and take you over, and it will not leave you quietly. i feel divinity in my bones like aching; like fire.
I swirl my finger in the powder, lightly dabbing it to my eyes. The glamour sets, lending a gentle touch and the warning that all predators have to heed once they try to hunt something colorful.
I uncap the tube, and run the length of my wand along my lashes, staining them with burnt embers and coals stoked with hellfire. It complements the fire in my eyes perfectly.
I dust the sunset onto my face, powdered clouds shaken off the fibers in my brush. I heard that this stuff was made of woven fairy wings and crushed beetle shells and all the beautiful things that was made in the wake of destruction.
I uncap the tube with a pop, and draw the velvety red across my lips. in the dead of night, maybe they’ll see my fangs pop bright against the blood crimson, and then they’ll know why not to mess with a force of nature.
I draw my finger across the glittery powder, finger shimmering with liquid diamond and deconstructed moonlight. now there’s something to match the gleam in my eyes and everyone will know that once I was a child of the stars.
I put on my warpaint.

“almost every woman i have ever met has a secret belief that she is just on the edge of madness, that there is some deep, crazy part within her, that she must be on guard constantly against ‘losing control’ — of her temper, of her appetite, of her sexuality, of her feelings, of her ambition, of her secret fantasies, of her mind”
— Elana Dykewomon “Notes for a Magazine"
girlhood & poison & fruit:
1. “Peach pits are poisonous. This is not a mistake. Girlhood is growing fruit around cyanide. It will never be your for swallowing.” (brenna twohy, from “swallowtail”)
2. “A child weaned on poison considers harm a comfort.” (gillian flynn, from “sharp objects”)
3.
(kenji toma, “ph.”)
4. “I am looking back to when I was a girl; now my body’s a flash of poison on the floor.” (aracelis girmay, from “self-portrait as the snake”)

“MY ARROGANCE KNOWS NO BOUNDS AND I WILL MAKE NO PEACE TODAY, AND YOU SHOULD BE SO LUCKY TO FIND A WOMAN LIKE ME” | Jenny Holzer, “Projections”
Important note : this is a projection by artist Jenny Holzer, but the text comes from a poem by Arab American writer Mohja Kahf, ’Ishtar Awakens in Chicago’. Holzer used Kahf’s work with her full agreement, I believe they’ve collaborated several times, but please check out the full context of the poem below.
My arrogance knows no bounds And I will make no peace today And you shall be so lucky To find a woman like me
Today neither will the East claim me nor the West admit me Today my belly is a well wherein serpents are coiled ready to poison the world, and you should be so lucky.
All I have is my arrogance I will teach it to lean back and smoke a cigarette in your faces, and you should be so lucky
No I will make no peace even though my hands are empty I will talk as big as I please I will be all or nothing And I will jump before the heavy trucks And I will saw off my leg at the thigh before I bend one womanly knee
I am poison And you will drink me And you should be so lucky.
