‏ عندما لا أجد شخصاً اخبره بما في قلبي .

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The Fire complained to its Lord saying: ‘O Lord, parts of me have consumed other parts.’ So He allowed it two breaths: one breath in winter and one breath in summer. That is why you experience the most severe heat and the most severe cold.”

- Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

The apparent meaning: Allah truly allowed Jahannam to breathe in a manner befitting it, and one effect of that is the extreme heat we experience in summer and severe cold in winter. We affirm it without trying to imagine how.

* It does not mean summer itself is Hell, nor that every hot day is literally Hellfire reaching Earth.

It is a reminder that worldly heat as intense as it feels is nothing compared to the reality of the Hereafter.

The Prophet ﷺ also used this as advice:

“When the heat becomes severe, delay the prayer until it cools down, for severe heat is from the breath of Hell.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

A beneficial reflection the scholars mention: if the heat of this dunya can make us uncomfortable, then preparing for the Hereafter through tawbah, duʿā’, and righteous deeds becomes even more important.

May Allah ﷻ grant us protection from Jahannam and make us among the people of Jannah.
