Thinking about the ‘he’s dead. You won’ scene in Elles hotel room rn because it feels so telling in terms of Spencer Reid’s social skills. People often act like Spencer cannot empathise with other people but I think that’s not where he struggles. He can see his friends are hurting and he wants to help but he gets stuck trying to figure out the best way to do so. People always say to put yourself in other peoples shoes, which as an autistic person I think is a wholly unhelpful phrase. What comforts an autistic person often doesn’t comfort a neurotypical person and that’s something you tend to learn the hard way.

Spencer works in hard facts and statistics. In his mind the fact that Elle killed him would be comforting. She did what she had to do and a bad man is no longer alive. So that’s what he says. We see him do the same thing when JJ is struggling with PTSD after being held hostage. He rationalises and puts things in the form of factual information which doesn’t help others. That scene kills me because he says something about how her symptoms are typical trauma reactions and that would probably comfort him because it confirms they’re not symptoms of anything else (cough cough schizophrenia).

This is moreso a post about how autistic people are often said to lack emotional intelligence but it’s less of an emotional intelligence issue as it is a language barrier. I’ve always found it hard to comfort people and I end up sounding a lot like Spencer in those moments. But yeah that’s like a pet peeve on the way we talk about Spencer, I think he’s incredibly emotionally intelligent idgaf
