Victoria Sinitsina & Nikita Katsalapov, SD at Skate America practice 10/23/15
Some thoughts:
I feel like Nikita is moving the same as he did in I/K’s Swan Lake, but I’m leaning towards this being a Nikita problem rather than a choreo problem. They didn’t go for a ballet program, which is probably smart. Program is very open, probably to accentuate their speed. Felt a little heavy in the polka part, but not egregiously so. Marina and co. still have not taught Nikita how to partner or Vika how to bend her knees, but I also feel they’ve done a somewhat better job of disguising that this season. All in all, despite occasional bouts of Nikita having trouble adopting different movement styles and interpretation for different programs, it doesn’t really feel much like I/K’s FD. They could be solid contenders for bronze if they hit their levels, depending on how H/B and Y/M are looking. If all three have similar TES, I’d lean towards S/K landing on the podium due to PCS.
Papadakis and Cizeron's New Programs
SD: “Charms” from film “W.E.” FD: “Rain in your black eyes” Ezio Bosso, “To build a home”
Just some random thoughts too. As entertaining as it is to make guesses about the world podium, that's forever away. So much can and probably will change between then and now. It's easy to fall in the trap of comparing memories of programs polished right up to worlds with the new programs on their first outing at senior Bs. Speaking of peaking at various times, Virtue/Moir never won a Grand Prix Final but managed to get it all together by Worlds.
Ah anon, but if I don't make incredibly, laughably wrong predictions about ice dance whatever will I do all day?
I do think people are having unrealistic expectations of what programs should look like at this point. Most people look in shape at this point, in my opinion. I think some programs may be misfires, but programs have improved a lot with mileage in the past.
There are so many things in ice dance you can't possibly predict, but that's what makes it so much fun! I would like to make it clear that I have no crystal ball in these matters. So expect to see me be incredibly wrong at multiple points this season.
Current Musings on Ice Dance
I’m going to start posting more in depth thoughts and analysis on individual teams soon, but here are some general thoughts:

Do you think that H/B are a disappointment?
Hello anon! I apologize for not updating recently, but I’m writing up some thoughts that should go up soon.
H/B being a disappointment is a little harsh, but this was a disappointing outing for them. I think that a large part of the backlash they’re facing right now is that people had a lot of hopes and expectations for them that they’re currently not meeting. The thing about teams who are young and/or new is that people want to see, and even expect to see, huge strides from season to season. And sometimes that just doesn’t happen, for whatever reason. It doesn’t necessarily mean it will never happen or can’t happen, but it’s a little disappointing nonetheless. Add that to the fact that they just didn’t skate very well this weekend, which may have obscured some progress they did make, and people wind up with a perhaps excessively negative outlook on their future.
