Used these to help with my motion poster:

Who is the designer / studio? Who is the audience? What is the intent and/or message the design is communicating?

What kind of motion is employed in the animation? (e.g. fade in/out, change position, transparency, rotate, etc.) What kind of timing is used in the animation? (e.g. smooth, halting, energetic, etc.) What does the motion make you think of or feel like?

How does the motion used in the poster add to the communication of the design? How does the motion affect the hierarchy / flow / composition?

Review the typography, design elements, composition, content, visual strategies and motion… How do they contribute to your understanding of motion design? How are they relevant to your own design work?

Went layer by layer through clip groups, deleting unnecessary layers

Trying out various layouts, switching colours.

Still prefer the layout of the first one and want to try developing more.

The motion is applied on text to make it bounce and blur. This mimics the motion of going underwater where vision can be distorted. The motion links to the message of 'swimming in color' as the text is resembling a 'swimming' motion of going in and out of water, by going in and out of the color background.

The motion on this design brings the text and illustrations closer together and far apart again, creating a smooth loop. It conveys ideas about connection and people coming together. There is a motion of lines moving out which highlights the two illustrated characters motioning a fist bump.

Strengths:

Good use of negative space

The warm golden colours and serif typeface communicate a sense of heritage

Responded well to feedback and begun to explore the relationship between the letterforms and the diamond shapes, which creates interesting negative space

A more fluid placement was a good choice

Interesting visual strategy with strong potential

Weaknesses:

Consider how I might inject a little edge of the contemporary too, through colour or a secondary typeface

The information text should more clearly communicate that this is a special one-off event celebrating St Kevin’s Arcade, as “brunch soiree” reads more like a social meal than an event descriptor

Next Steps:

Need to develop the overall composition

Play with text size and placement, as well as the negative space and flow they create

Consider what the curvy lines are adding to my design and whether that secondary layer of movement could instead be achieved through typography
