 This reference sheet includes 50+ body types for people who struggle in creating unique character bodies.  Also I did a mini-breast tutorial, because I didn’t add breasts to any of the body types since breasts are so customizable.

Breakdown / Accent / Arc

To thank for the support for our film so far, we are posting some notes on animating originally made for our animation assistants. Breakdown is a very crucial technique of animating. It is a guideline of how every action should be acted out. It involves a thinking process of “hmm, I want my character to move in this way particularly, because of the context/situation/emotion/thought… etc”

do not start ur character design by doing a full, refined turnaround/model sheet.

like. everyone in my childrens book il class is fuckin doing this even though most of them are illustration majors and its a huge mistake (our prof literally warned them against this, and YET)

any time you design a character, start by not caring. by just doing what feels right. dont settle on the first thing; play around. and then draw your character a shitload of times before u start a ref sheet

dont finish anything, just. do super fast sketches of them over and over and over. fill up a page or two. as you draw them theyll evolve. that will happen whether your sketch it out at the beginning or jump right into a final draft, and lemme tell u, u do NOT want ur character evolving and changing AFTER ur final draft. u want to get that out of the way early so u can get a decently consistent finished product

then when you go to do your model sheet you will already be able to keep your character on model without it bc youve drawn them a shitload of times. then it wont be “struggling to draw the character the same every time” itll just be “this is what the character looks like and i could draw them with my eyes closed bc of muscle memory”

dont just jump in and be like “shit i gotta have this full complex polished thing right out of the gate!” like. in the beginning, Do Not Work Hard. play. play a lot. and THEN do a refined drawing. your refined drawing will look way better, too, bc by then youll be completely comfortable with your design

A tiny sequence I animated on the side over a year ago to help Nölwenn make a ‘first look’ for her short film! A lot has changed over the past year since then, most notably how the render is going to work, and you can keep up to date with the short film over on her Tumblr. From what I gather, things are moving along nicely and I’m looking forward to seeing more from the little blue mouse soon n.n

It was the first time I’d animated in 2D since the Gobelins short, ‘One Day’, and dusting off the A5 Wacom tablet made me realise how impractical it is to animate with that thing on a 13″ Macbook screen :’D  I’ve been working in 3D now for four years and I love it - but I would not say no to working on a 2D project if I could actually try out animating on a Cintiq *w*

Similar to my other 2D stuff, I animated in Flash and tied-down in Photoshop.

As for me, I have been absent from Tumblr for a while (changed studios and more drastically, moved country!), but do not fret, regular scheduled posting will resume imminently, and I might even be giving stuff away! ;P
