WHERE: back of the pick up, taos
the summit was one of the most exciting times of the year, at least to lee it was. it made him feel like more of a kid than christmas had in a long time, and despite the frigid temperature, he was posted up in the back of his truck watching everyone as if they were moving constellations. then that face walked by and he jumped out of the bed as fast as he ever had, "hey! you!" he drawled, brimming with a quiet enthusiasm. lee bennett has never known a stranger, "want a beer?" he asked, more than ready to immerse himself in the unpredictability of whatever conversation was coming his way. before the other could answer, he was rummaging inside of his cooler for a bottle. he cast a glance that said catch before tossing. beside his truck, he had a small fire going, which he ducked down by for some warmth and teased, "are you even old enough to drink?" an obvious joke. shamelessly, he sat down in the dirt, digging his toes in the rocks by the fire. he couldn't think of a more perfect way to spend the new year. lee sipped on his already open beer and struck up the conversation he sought out to have, "make any resolutions this year?"
alfie had been pretty much trying to find the person he had been looking for all through the base camp. he knew that it was sort of an impossible mission, but that never made him give up. in fact, at this point, he just thought he was never going to give up. but maybe just for one night, he could have some fun. he had been hanging out by himself at the rv, but he decided that it should be good if he went out and talked to some people. of course, nothing could have prepared him for the first person he ran into. alfie immediately recognized the voice calling out for him, but he thought maybe he wasn’t talking to him. he couldn’t have been. turning around slowly, alfie could swear he heard his heart drop to his feet as he looked over at lee. he hadn’t talked to him (or seen) him ever since... alfie decided to push away those thoughts or he might as well just start crying in front of him. maybe he was being dramatic, but after everything that had happened, alfie decided it would probably be for the best if he didn’t cry in front of him. “uh... i... uh...” he stuttered in those words. “a-a beer would be fine, thanks.” he said with a nod. “and... no, not really.” he answered him, not sure what else to say.

The night is cool and riddled with clouds, the camp is quiet, and Benji’s near a deserted porta potty smoking pot. In fact, he’s waiting. Earlier in the day an eager (and hopefully loaded) drifter approached him with the request to meet for an exchange of funds. That person was thirty minutes late now. It wasn’t surprising - especially for a rubber tramp. People around here had a tendency to be flaky without reason. They all seemed to operate on a different concept of time. That’s just part of the lifestyle, even if it sucked for business. Benji pulled the collar of his flannel coat closer to his neck, shoulders hunched as the joint glowed between his index finger and thumb. He couldn’t complain about the mild weather - nothing here compared to distant memories of his hometown’s bleak boreal forests - but he’d grown relatively soft over the last few years. The weed and tattered fisherman’s toque on his head were enough to take an edge off the chill. Seeing a person approach through the twilight elicited him to speak up, assuming it was the tardy drug seeker. “Next time you’re late I’ll raise my rates.” He took a puff of his joint. Crisp night air accentuated smoke filtering up over his cheeks. “I don’t usually wait around.”
alfie probably shouldn’t wander around on his own, but that’s what he liked to do. especially since they were all at base camp. it was a place that they didn’t see often and alfie liked to explore, watch the stars and the moon, wonder about his life. of course, he often finds himself getting lost in his path and the next thing he knew, he was far from his rv. but there was no worry there, he would find his way back eventually. as he was walking, he saw someone approach him. alfie couldn’t exactly see who it was since it was dark, so he felt a lump on his throat as he thought he was about to be attacked by someone. he stopped in his tracks until the other finally spoke, which left him a little relieved - at least he hadn’t been attacked right away, even though there could be a possibility of that happening. with a confused look on his face, alfie tilted his head to the side slightly as he struggled to find what to say. “i’m... late?” he asked, looking around for a bit. alfie couldn’t remember if he had planned anything to be late to. “i-i don’t even know you!” he stuttered to the other, looking at him as cleared his throat. “at least i don’t think i do...” he said quietly, standing his ground.
Cole tried to be agreeable-- he really did! Try! But hearing nothing but Madonna and Whitney for the last three days was wearing on him, making him more irritable than usual. The second their RV was in park, Cole grabbed his backpack, offered a rushed goodbye, and all but collapsed out of the front door. He was stunned for a second; half of him was expecting all the stories about the summit-- about a bigger group of rubber tramps-- to be just stories. But the camp was full and bustling with commotion. Slinking through the throng of people, Cole located his target. Leaning forward on an arm, he mustered up a friendly smile. "You got a stereo deck that's unoccupied? Or a Walkman? Mine's busted." More than he hated talking to new people, Cole needed to cleanse his ears-- to listen to some real music.
alfie didn’t mind bonnie’s music, he really didn’t. of course, most of the time alfie had his headphones on, listening to his own music on his walkman, but he thought that bonnie had a good taste in music. of course he usually wouldn’t say that out loud - he was more of a smile and nod kind of guy. however, they had just gotten to the summit and he thought it would be good for him to catch some air. however, while he hadn’t expected to find so many people at base camp, he saw it as a good thing. maybe he would find the person who he was looking for... even if there were a lot of people there, he would recognize his face anywhere. his heart skipped a beat for a beat once he saw someone walking towards him, but then... he realized it was cole. alfie let out a small sigh as he gave the other a smile - the two had been travelling together for some time now and alfie had grown to like cole... really like him. but that didn’t matter right now. “uh...” he said as he reached for his backpocket, taking out his walkman and removing the headphones that were hanging from his neck. “you can have mine. but... i’ll need it back. i get sick in the rv if i don’t have them.” he said, turning slightly red as he handed it to cole. “there’s a lot of people here, right?” he asked, looking around slowly.
alfie thought he had gone crazy when he reached for his shirt’s pocket and didn’t find the box of matches. how could have he let this happened? he wondered if he had dropped them on his way back to the rv and so without much thought, he stormed out as he looked around the ground for the box of matches. the people who would eventually pass by would think he was crazy, but he needed to find that box of matches or else... what was it all for? okay, maybe that was a little dramatic, but that was alfie. he was just like that.
turning his head left and right, scanning the floor, he knew that it wasn’t going to be easy. it was getting dark and cold and soon enough he had to go back to the rv before he froze to death. that’s when he spotted someone crouching near what seemed to be like an unlit fireplace and just by luck, alfie spotted a box of matches on the other’s hand. the box of matches. running towards the other’s direction, alfie didn’t even have time to say hello - he just snatched the box right out of the other’s hand, blushing a bit at the way he was behaving. it was like someone had stolen a piece of chocolate from him. “y-you can’t use those!” he said, looking over at the person, his voice cracking a bit as he said those words. he cleared his throat again, shaking his head. “i mean... sorry, you... you can’t use those. they’re... mine.” he said, his face completely red as he shoved the box of matches in his pocket again.
[ADAM DI MARCO, CIS MALE, HE/HIM] ever heard about [ALFRED “ALFIE” BAILEY]? Out here on the road, they have a reputation of being [COMPASSIONATE & SENSITIVE] but also [NAIVE & GULLIBLE], no wonder they’re called [THE DON JUAN]. According to local legend, they’re [TWENTY-SIX] and when they pull up to camp not a soul can mistake the sound of [HEAVEN by BRYAN ADAMS] following them. Some say they carry [HIS COPY OF “LITTLE WOMEN”, HIS WALKMAN, A BOX OF MATCHES THAT HE GAVE YOU & A POLAROID PICTURE OF HIM AND HIS MOM] and have been traveling with [THE CON JOBS].
his past...
The moment Alfred Bailey was born, the whole world stopped. Or at least, it seemed to stop for his family and especially, for his mom. He was born into a seemingly happy family that longed for a boy ever since the last girl was born. “This is our last try.” His father had said to his mother and just like that, it seemed like the fates had listened to these words and so Alfred was brought onto this world. He had been his parents’ fourth try after their three girls were born, which they loved dearly, but deep down they had always wanted a boy – they just couldn’t share that. From the moment he was born, Alfred was babied. No one could deny it, not even his mom could deny it – it was clear as water that he was his mother’s favorite, even his sisters could tell that. As hard as his mom tried to hide it, she just couldn’t. She would always protect the sweet boy she had given birth to – Alfred didn’t mind, of course. In fact, he got too used to it and the more he grew up, the more he searched for his mom’s approval for everything.
His sisters never held him accountable for taking all their mother’s love. Alfred was sure it was because they had the freedom to do as they pleased, but he never discussed it with them. The more he grew up, the more Alfred grew sensitive to everything that surrounded him. He was sure that it was either because of his sisters or because of the love his mom gave him, but he knew that he was more sensitive than the other boys in his school. He was the kind of kid that would cry over a stomped flower, which of course, led to some troubles with the boys at his school – but there was one who was different. Alfred was sure that he had never felt like that before – he was only thirteen and he had only read about love, he never could have thought it felt like that. But he knew that he was different from the other boys – not that it was a bad thing, but he never shared his feelings with anyone. Instead, he preferred to daydream and imagine a life with his “friend”.
Alfred was never sure why his “friend” had stopped talking to him. Maybe he hadn’t been as cautious as he thought he was being, or maybe he had gotten a girlfriend and forgot about him. Just like he had read about love, he had only read about heartbreak, and it was much worse than he thought. His mother tried to find out what was happening, tried to get some answers out of him but he never shared the truth – he was in love with a boy that wanted to do nothing with him. Maybe one day he would tell her about everything, but now wasn’t the time. He promised his mom that he would be fine… after all, if Laurie could move on from Jo, then so could he, right?
He grew up and learned how to accept himself for who he was. Alfred worked hard, got into college and gained a bit of freedom once he found out that there was more to the world. He didn’t lose his essence when he got into the college. He was still the sensitive and naïve boy that his mother had raised – and he was sure that he was going to fall in love with every boy that he met. There were just too many, but no one was like his roommate. Alfred didn’t mean to fall hard for this one, but he did – and he seemed to forget everything he had learned about his heartbreak from middle school. He found himself daydreaming again, thinking about how life could be with his roommate. They already shared a room, Alfred wondered how it would be if they shared more than that. Maybe he was getting ahead of himself, but Alfred caught himself more than once staring at him and he couldn’t stop.
There were many good moments with him that Alfred cherishes, but the one that impacted him most was the night of the blackout in the dormitory. It was right before an exam and Alfred needed to study, so amid desperation, his roommate lit a candle right by his desk. “Always carry matches with you, you never know when you’re going to need them.” He remembers these words, they’re always in the back of his mind. Alfred could have never expected that he would just disappear like that. The last thing he expected was to come back to his room and it being empty – the only thing left was the box of matches he had used during that night. He felt like the world was going to end, but he couldn’t let himself fall down the rabbit hole that was heartbreak again.
A year passed, Alfred graduated, and everything seemed to be normal again. But in the back of his mind, all he could think about was him. He needed to find him. Without much explanation, Alfred left the town he had grown up in, only leaving a small message to his mom. Alfred knew that this was going to break her heart, but he needed to fix his first. And so, he set off in hopes that he would find him, only taking a few essentials with him and the box of matches, hoping to return them to his true love.
