Hi!!! Since you've posted about moving/getting a rabbit soon, I just wanted to say–If you haven't already, I'd highly recommend looking for a rabbit rescue in the area!! There are so many bunnies out there in need of homes, and the rescues are heading into their post-easter surge of surrenders/dumped bunnies. Some general animal shelters will have them, but there are also a ton of rabbit specific rescues. They can be pretty small/hard to find, but good places to find them are websites like petfinder, or on Facebook/Instagram.
Rabbit rescues are also great resources in general!! If you aren't ready to adopt right away you could foster them, or a lot of rescues will have a foster-to-adopt program. Rescues are also a great place to go for knowledge/resources, from things like basic care and health questions, to recommendations for local vets with rabbit experience, as well as basically any other questions you may have.
Also, I'd highly recommend getting two bunnies. Rabbits can be happy alone, but it'll require spending a lot of time with them, and when it comes down to it–they're social animals, nothing beats the companionship of another bunny. Bonding them can be difficult, but often rescues can help–or they'll have an already bonded pair available for adoption. Of course, there are certain scenarios where it's best to only have one, and some bunnies simply don't like others, but as a general rule, it's best to get two whenever possible.
Of course, you might know/have thought of all of this already, I just wanted to say it in case–working with rescues has taught me that there are less people than I thought who know about these options, so I'm always trying to spread the word about them 🐇💕
I'm 100% on board with you on all of this. I appreciate your thoughtful message nonetheless! I want to assure you that I fully plan to rescue my future rabbit. I grew up not living someplace that allowed pets, so I worry that I might be overwhelmed if I adopt two at once, but I hope to have two after a few months of staring at a singular rabbit and trying to understand what is going on in their lil rabbity head. I have a twin brother and I literally cannot imagine life without someone else to annoy and enjoy whenever I want, so I also would never subject my rabbit to such a solitary existence. I have met one rabbit in my whole life, when I was in first grade, and it ruined my life. Because I have never stopped thinking about him all alone in the small sad cage my grade school friend kept him in and from that day on I have not been able to get rabbits out of my head. My heart beats just for them. All I have ever wanted in this world is to love a rabbit (just one to start) and give them the absolute best life that I can. This has been the sole motivator for me doing....anything. one day soon my rabbit day will finally arrive. AND IM GOING TO BE THE BEST DANG RABBIT PARENT I CAN BE!!
Also also! I wish so much that I could foster rabbits, but sadly I am in an apartment and while it does allow rabbits, you have to pay a pet deposit and pay pet rent for every pet you put in your apartment and I can't afford to put down a $300 deposit + $30/month on top of my regular rent every time I bring a rabbit into my home BECAUSE I WOULD BRING MULTIPLE right I mean they gotta have friends. They gotta start a gang and become a real fluffle with matching mini jean jackets and everything...) 💖🐇💖🐇
