The second Alicent acts like an actual person with fear, anger, survival instincts, political awareness, or maternal protectiveness, people loses its fucking mind. If she sacrifices herself completely for the realm and asks for nothing? She’s praised as “graceful.” But the moment she wants security for herself or her children, or tries asserting influence in a court that would absolutely destroy her if she stayed passive, then… she’s just a power-hungry snake.

People claim to want “complex female characters,” but a lot of them only tolerate complexity in women when it stays aesthetically soft and morally convenient. Alicent’s problem is that she embodies traditionally feminine roles wife, mother, queen consort, caretaker but also shows the bitterness, repression, anger, and political calculation that realistically come with surviving inside those roles. That makes people uncomfortable because it ruins the fantasy of the endlessly pure maternal figure.

Male characters are allowed ambition without their entire morality being questioned. Fathers protecting their bloodline are seen as pragmatic but mothers doing the same are considered manipulative or hysterical. Men can lash out under pressure and still be called layered, but women are expected to absorb suffering with saint-like composure forever or else they “fail” femininity.
