I’m so sick of OITNB fans constantly going off about how much they hated Piper for being privileged and annoying and how “boring” her storyline was. Not only is it the most irritating kind of performative wokeness (I get it, you hate the rich white girl, here’s a gold star 🙄) it’s also just not true.

Piper’s story is interesting *because* she came from a privileged background. Not only is it a classic fish out of water narrative, but it’s especially interesting because of how quickly and sharply Piper’s perception changes. Piper has in all likelihood never even met someone who’s been to prison before. When she hands herself in at the beginning she’s obviously upset but she trusts the system to take care of her as long as she plays by the rules. In no time at all she realises that the system, which she previously thought was harsh but fair, doesn’t give a shit about her or anyone else. She and the other inmates are barely treated like humans and even the favouritism she receives only gets her so far. All this stuff is a far cry from what she “studied” before going to prison.

It’s also quite realistic (if cynical) the way she teams up with the racist guards to keep a monopoly on her used underwear business, and a sharp commentary on how liberal, progressive values can easily go out the window when privileged people feel threatened. And besides, it’s nice to get distracted with her and Alex’s relationship drama from time to time as a break from the more serious stuff.

I’ve only been hanging out with people who have been laying low like me so idk agh I don’t wanna be rude or seem lame if I ask if she’s being safe or be like no meet me on zoom lmao 😪
