Entry 1: Lost

I found a… thing, hanging in midair. It was random chance, I found it in the basement of the abandoned building I’ve been staying- no, I found it in the basement of my home. I dropped the candle, plunging the room into darkness, and there it was. At about shoulder level, a little crack in the air, letting in the softest golden glow. It’s so thin I can’t see what’s on the other side, but when I hold my breath and put my ear up to the opening I can hear somewhere else. I think it’s home. The sound is just a whisper, but I hear voices and movement and a speaker system and trains.

I have no idea if this will work, but I’m going to put this letter through the crack.

They’re thin here, the walls. Not like that translucent place I found a few weeks back, but thin. I dream of home. Not from nostalgia, I do that too, but real-time. There’s a real-time feed pouring into my head. I see the postman walk down my street. See my kid playing basketball in the driveway. I’m a goddamned antenna, pulling in a feed of the life I’ve lost. Around every corner I’m hit by a new torment from home. Mid-step my vision clouds, there’s Sadie, our yappy goddamn dog, digging under the fence, again. I step out into the night, there’s Amy, sitting with friends under that old tree.
