I was searching for the "Am I a lesbian" masterdoc online, and came across people (like 3 at best) calling it transmisogynistic, which was extremely off-putting - it left me confused for not noticing this supposed transmisogyny, despite being TMA myself. Also came across lesbophobic bullshit along the way, that was great. (sarcasm)
Only after a while did I find out they (at least one of them) referred to it that way because "it deals with comphet through the lens of being a little girl who wants to date a boy and have a family" (i.e. it fails to analyse comphet from a TMA person's perspective). Going from that to calling the doc transmisogynistic, to me, is a huge leap.
Am I saying the doc isn't excluding lesbians who fall out of these experiences? Of course not, especially if it is supposed to be for all lesbians.
But pointing out a flaw is one thing, calling it transmisogyny is another, and these two may not be correlated. In this case, there is no aggression, no transmisogyny.
Of course, you can be transmisogynistic without "meaning" it, but that's still a big accusation. Saying the doc is transmisogynistic leads to conclusions such as "it thinks TMA people can't be lesbians", or "it's a TERF doc", both of which aren't true, and may even make people feel bad for not seeing this transmisogyny, not to mention classifying it incorrectly may lead people to classify their own experiences incorrectly, etc.
Knowledge is only useful if it helps change the world. In this case, does classifying the doc as transmisogynistic add more to our knowledge, that is, does it help us deal with the issue at hand?
I personally think not - that is, I believe classifying the doc as transmisogynistic has more negative than positive effects.
So, next time, let us please consider, when attempting to classify something as transmisogynistic: does this (actively) harm TMA people?
In the case of the document, it definitely could be improved with the input of TMA lesbians, but does that mean it's transmisogynistic? No, not at all.
