Egwene's consciousness slowly returned from the darkness, and she found herself face to face with the woman who had struck her. Her smug smile were back, but she rubbed her left eye, a bruise was already beginning to form.

Yet, Egwene's victory was short-lived. As Egwene's fist connected with the woman's face the impact of her strike seemed to reverberate through Egwene's body, leaving her ears ringing and her head spinning, as if she had been struck by a large man.

Blazing anger surged through Egwene, and before she could even think, instinct took over. Her hands clenched into tight fists, and without hesitation, she lashed out, delivering a swift and forceful strike to the smirking woman's face.

Egwene's ears caught the distinct sound of a sharp metallic click, and in an instant, she felt something cold and constrictive encircle her neck. The chilling touch sent a shiver down her spine.

Egwene's desperation surged, her frantic attempts to break through the unyielding shield becoming increasingly frenzied. However, the woman in gray, maintained her grip on the shield, displaying a strength that far surpassed Egwene's own.

In the midst of the chaos, one of the women standing beside the women in gray stepped forward, revealing a long cord that connected the glimmering silver collar on the gray-dressed woman to a matching bracelet encircling the first woman's wrist.

With a harsh jerk, the woman tugged at the cord, her face contorting with frustration and anger, and she pointed vehemently towards the direction Nynaeve and the others had fled.

"Stupid damane, now they are getting away! Hurry up!" she barked, her voice thick with irritation and urgency.

Treachery at Toman Head (part 23)

As though a torrent of icy water had engulfed her, Egwene's senses were overwhelmed. Her body went numb, and she gasped for precious air, the sudden shock leaving her disoriented. Saidar slipped away from her grasp, replaced by an impenetrable barrier, a shield skillfully woven by one of the women in gray.

Desperation coursed through her, and she clawed futilely at the shield, but it remained steadfast, denying her even a single trickle of saidar. Panic surged within her, but her body seemed to betray her, paralyzed by the shock and helplessness of the situation. Helpless, she could only watch in horror as flows of air coiled around her, constricting and restraining her movements.

"Nynaeve, Egwene, Min, run!" Elayne's desperate cry echoed once more, urging her friends to escape.

Treachery at Toman Head (part 22)

Suddenly, an immense glow erupted to Egwene's right. Fueled by a tempestuous rage, Nynaeve had seized saidar, and the very air seemed to churn and dance around them. Flows of air whipped up dust, creating a maelstrom of chaos. Nynaeve struggled to control her weaves, the raw power surging through her.

"Run!" Elayne's faint voice reached Egwene's ears amid the roaring winds, urging them to flee.

But it was too late for that, Egwene realized. She had to steady herself and grasp saidar to protect herself from the women in gray, but in this tumultuous environment, finding saidar proved to be no easy feat.

Treachery at Toman Head (part 21)

Weaves of the One Power began to form around the women, but there was something off about them. They lacked the fluidity and grace of an Aes Sedai's weaves, appearing instead strict and rigid, as if the women were channeling the bare minimum to achieve their intent.

Treachery at Toman Head (part 20)

Suddenly, the air was charged with saidar as a glow surrounded the two gray-clad women with silver collars. Egwene stared at them in astonishment. They were channelers too!

The women began to move their arms in strange, almost mechanical patterns. It appeared more like reflex than conscious movement. Egwene could see that their motions were highly coordinated and precise, almost as if they had been drilled to perform them.

As the blue-clad trio approached, the women standing next to the dead-eyed figures in grey spoke up with a stern voice.

"Marath'aethan'ketvar."

The unfamiliar words puzzled Egwene, yet the intent was unmistakable. This was a command directed at the women with the silver collars.

Treachery at Toman Head (part 18)

Suroth remained silent, but her right hand made a subtle, commanding gesture. In response, the maid standing to her right lifted her head from her bowing posture and directed a nod towards the three women in blue dresses, their strange silver coils glimmering strangely in the sun.

Without a word, the trio began to approach Egwene and the other girls.

Treachery at Toman Head (part 17)

"High lady Suroth," Liandrin responded with an equal angry sneer.

"This needs to be done quickly," Suroth said with a slurred voice. "Turak cannot know that I have left the city. We must return before he realizes I am gone."

Nynaeve interjected, seething with anger. "What is going on here? And what is she talking about, Liandrin?"

Liandrin placed a hand on Nynaeve's shoulder and another on Egwene's. "These are the two of whom you have been told, and there is another one."

Treachery at Toman Head (part 16)

As they approached the group, Egwene's attention was immediately drawn to the woman reclining in the palanquin. Her appearance was striking, to say the least. She wore a luxurious white silk dress adorned with intricate motifs of flowers and birds.

The sides of her head were shaved, save for a wide crest of black hair that flowed down her back. She wore an elaborate crown-like headdress, and her fingers and arms were adorned with a small fortune's worth of golden rings and bracelets. Around her neck hung a large, diamond-studded necklace that glittered in the sunlight. But what truly stood out were the woman's nails, which were over an inch long, and two of her fingers on each hand were lacquered blue.

It was clear that this was a noblewoman, but Egwene had never seen anyone like her before. The woman's chest was adorned with a diamond-studded brooch from which three golden hoops hung. Egwene couldn't help but notice the two golden rings that dangled from the last hoop, resembling the great serpent rings worn by Aes Sedai and Accepted in the White Tower.

As the woman stretched, her golden bracelets rattled and she spoke in a slurred voice that was difficult to understand.
