i think one thing i really like about daniel is he's so. he wants you to think he dgaf so bad, he's such a prickly little pear, and yet like. he has so much genuine childlike wonder. he loves magic. he lowkey believes in friendship saving the day. he's the one who clings tightest to the horsemen, both as a magic show/group and as a found family, the one who tries the hardest to keep them together. he still, to this day, gets a bit starry-eyed when impressed by a really good magic trick or confronted with really cool magic history. his reaction to getting one truly pulled over on him (CRUCIALLY, when it's not malicious/harming his friends like in nysm2--i'm particularly thinking of the dylan reveal in nysm1, though i think it applies to the newbies in nysm3) is to be impressed and kinda. i wouldn't quite say overjoyed, but like, that almost starry-eyed surprise you know? like. he doesn't get mad at being outsmarted (except, again, when it directly leads to him and his friends getting hurt, because then he's blaming himself) but impressed (which is a combination of the genuine self-confidence of "wow, you must be REALLY good to outsmart ME, good job" which is what i was really hoping for more of with the newbies if they were gonna go there lol and like, just again, that genuine wonder and curiosity and desire to learn and see new things) like he is just. always so thrilled to see things he doesn't understand (even if he does want to then pull it apart until he does) and be, even for a moment, even if it's just until he can pull it off himself, too, the audience for a damn good magic trick
