me: i don't think they did

my mom: I've definitely seen them as cartoons.

me: well, sometimes they were drawn for advertisements.

my mom: ....

me: they had comic books.

my mom: .....

me: also I draw them as cartoons and i have shown you some of them.

how'd you learn to draw? did you go to art school?

HI sorry this has been in my ask box for a minute, i kept forgetting to answer it!!!

i sort of went to art school. i always drew, but i started taking some casual art classes when i was around 12, and then some slightly more serious ones when i got to be about 15. I did one semester of art college, but had to drop out. All the classes I took were very focused on realism with graphite/charcoal, so I had to research and teach myself about cartoons, which is (perhaps slightly obviously) where my passion lies.

so my art philosophy is, yanno, it's good to get a basic set of skills and then use that to jump into whatever you want! and it can be REALLY basic. i think anyone who wants to learn to draw should start by looking at ed emberly books, then get into learning basic 3D shapes and shading. from there, the world is truly your oyster. but i think starting with ed emberly makes things a little more fun. drawing is really, honestly about trying to figure out how to trick the brain into seeing something, and ed really GETs that and has fun with it. a successful drawing only merely has to SUGGEST something!!!
