i'm getting on the right side of history

I love my boy and I love Isola, but Tumblr RP is just increasingly getting more difficult for me with everything else I’ve got going on. I figured I’d rather disappoint everyone just the one time rather than constantly disappointing them by dropping threads, heh.

Maybe I’ll swing back around at some point, but I wanted to thank you guys for making this such an amazing experience. I picked up Varian while I was going through a really rough time, and he’s become one of my most successful muses ever, with exactly the sort of character growth and relationships I’ve always been looking for. You all make this place happen.

“Hey, you.”

He leans over and plants a kiss on her cheek.

It takes a lot of being lost. A lot of being hurt, making mistakes, losing your way. A lot of time spent feeling like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. That there is so much that you will never understand.  That your mistakes define you.

That there is not a place in this world for you.

But in the end? On that day when you finally figure out where it is you belong?

...There’s nothing he can really say besides the fact that he hopes some way, somehow, this all works out.

“...at least I’ve got my dad back!”

Marceline sighs, a little relieved–she was pretty sure they could bring people back from the dead here, but she wasn’t sure how it worked, and she was definitely not prepared for a conversation about how to talk to a person you knew was supposed to be dead. At the very least, she’d have to wing it a lot more than she usually did.

Marceline brought one knee up to her chest, her other foot dropping to hang off the couch as she listened. That look he made before coughing probably meant this was immediately after his last story for her.

She nods. “Sounds a little like Yin and Yang, if you know anything about that.” Looking up and meeting his eyes, Marceline huffs through her nose, a general feeling of what occurred next being not quite beneficial passing through her gut. “Hoo boy. What’d she do?”

There’s a pause. He glances back down, fingers trailing over the page.

Then he looks back up.

“...She took it.”

It’s simple enough, and accompanied by a shrug, as if there’s nothing more to say about it, even if he knows that isn’t true.

Marceline nods, understanding at least somewhat. “A feeling in your jellies, can’t quite shake it off, somethin’s wrong and you don’t know what? I getcha.”

“And that… happens more often than you think. I can remember a time where my foster dad came in but he was from a time when I was a little girl. That was a weird one.” 

She thinks for a moment. “Cassandra’s the angry one, right?” A pause. “Did… something happen to her, but here she doesn’t know about it?” Marceline hesitates, considering the air around Varian for a beat before she whispers, “Is she… okay? Back home? Like, she’s not…” She draws her thumb across her throat in a quick line, grimacing a bit.

A snort of a laugh at her anecdote. “Yeah, that does sound weird. Meanwhile Eugene ended up getting brought back from a time where he hates me. So that’s nice.”

Another sigh, and he doesn’t look up from the couch, shoulders going increasingly stiff as she speaks. But when she finishes, his head whips up, eyes wide.

“What? No, no, she’s not dead! She just...” The adrenaline surge wears off quickly and his shoulders slump, his chin dropping back towards his chest. There’s a long silence as he considers how to explain, and he opens his notebook and idly flips through it as he thinks.

“...Rapunzel left Corona a little bit after...” A sidelong glance. He clears his throat. “...her birthday. She told me she was following the black rocks, and at the end of them, the thing that had made them, was...the moonstone. The exact counter to the sundrop that makes Rapunzel’s hair like that. Apparently, it was her destiny to unite the sundrop and the moonstone, but...”

He opens the notebook back to the page he’d been on, and gestures to some crescent moon and star-related symbols lower on the page, along with some chemical formulae. When he meets Marceline’s eyes again, he looks grim.

“Not botherin’ me at all, hon.” She wanders over to the couch, producing an apple of her own, that she’d grabbed on her trek through the kitchen, as she climbs over the arm of the couch to sit cross-legged next to Varian.

She peers at the contents of the pages he’s looking at, draining the red from her snack before tossing it over to the raccoon. “Mmkay. Let’s say I bought that. How do you plan on remembering what you figure out when you go home again? You know as well as I do now that we don’t keep our memories of this place.”

She quirks a friendly smirk. “C’mon, Varian. What’s keeping you awake tonight? Talk it out with me, maybe I can help.”

He really hates when other people are right.

Varian lets out a huff of a sigh, changing his position so he’s sitting facing her with his legs crossed to the side underneath him, notebook still on his lap. Ruddiger, for his part, peers at the apple and turns it over in his little hands as if inspecting it before deciding an apple is an apple, throwing the core he’d been nibbling halfway across the room and chowing down contentedly.

“...I got a bad feeling.” Varian smiles a little ruefully. “Sounds dumb when I put it like that, but...I guess I just started thinking of...everything that happened when I went home, and...everyone who was home who’s here. Me and Rapunzel and Eugene all went home, but...it’s like we all got brought back here at different times. And Cassandra...”
