Goodwood isn't that bad, all things considered. Security on site knows what they're doing, and even surrounded by a sea of people all clamoring for Lando, Steve feels like things are pretty much under control. Lando spends the event shuffled from one location to another, draped under the arms of other famous men, turning and flashing that easy, charming smile for one camera after another. Steve has been around long enough now to know that the crash is coming.
Family day is almost a day off for Steve, Lando securely tucked away from fans or media obligations. Steve is on call, but he doesn't hear from Lando. He watches the dot of his shared location move around the property, drive off for tea, come back. Lando texts him before he leaves for the night and again when he gets home. Steve is almost asleep when his phone pings a third time.
He rolls over, squinting against the brightness of the screen.
Lando: Can we set up a golf outing tomorrow?
Steve stares at the phone. Lando is more than capable of setting up his own golf schedule, so that's not what he's asking. Steve pinches the bridge of his nose and sighs, flips on the bedside lamp and calls Lando.
"I didn't want to wake you," Lando says by way of greeting.
"I wasn't asleep yet," Steve assures him, rubbing at his eyes. "Who do you want at this golf outing?" He uses Lando's phrase carefully.
"Whoever." Steve can picture the shrug, Lando toying with a seam somewhere on his clothes. "Just don't want to spend the day alone."
"Max-" Steve begins.
"Max is busy," Lando interjects. "I already." He stops. "I know it's late notice," he says. "I know this stuff stresses you out."
"The stress is my job," Steve reminds him. "Not yours." He appreciates the consideration, knows, from experience, that Lando can take a "no" well enough when he gets one. But he can hear it in Lando's voice, the comedown. Shame Fewtrell isn't available.
"Don't worry," Steve says. "I'll get it sorted."
"Thank you," Lando says, and Steve can hear the relief in his voice.
Getting it sorted is a bit of a nightmare, really, given the hour, but everyone involved knows rich people and a fair few of them know Lando. The invitation - discrete, succinct, auto-deleting - doesn't go out to the short list of approved recipients until Steve confirms the back nine are reserved for a private party the following afternoon. An eye-watering amount of money is transferred, though still well under Steve's discretionary cap for ad hoc things like this.
Steve gets about three hours of sleep, in the end. By the time he wakes up, there are two RSVPs. Lando would be disappointed with two. Steve thinks again about the argument over how small he'd made the list. He'd won out, in the end, but he'd promised Lando they could add to it when he was able to vet the others more thoroughly.
He's debating widening the circle when another RSVP drops. Steve smiles when he sees the name. It'll be a good afternoon for Lando.
By the time they get to the golf course, Lando is useless. He's vibrating like he's hopped up on sugar, head on a swivel as if he might recognize a car, catch sight of someone from his list. Steve is about to reach over and scruff him like a kitten. He's fairly confident it would work, is the thing, has thought about it more than once. He pictures Lando going slack and compliant under his hand, and. Well. There are reasons he hasn't tried it yet.
Lando shakes his head when Steve asks if he wants to know who's coming, and Steve is almost concerned when he says he wants it to be a surprise instead of making a bad joke about coming.
"It's a good list, though, yeah?" Lando asks, tearing his gaze away from the window to look at Steve.
Steve nods. "Yeah," he says.
"Good," Lando says. Something flickers through his eyes, a melancholy Steve has never understood that settles over Lando from time to time. "Do ya think..." he trails off.
If Steve were sitting closer, he'd bump him with his shoulder, try to shake the words loose. Instead he waits.
Lando doesn't finish the thought, chews at his thumb for a moment before catching himself and shoving his hands under his thighs.
"You'll have the place all to yourself," Steve says, even though Lando knows the arrangement already.
"You'll be there the whole time?" Lando asks.
Steve shoots him a sharp look, but there's no mischievous tilt to the question. Lando looks up from his phone when Steve doesn't answer immediately.
"As close as you want me to be," Steve says. "I planned to be outside the tent."
Lando tips his head up in acknowledgement but doesn't reply. It seems like there's something else he wants to say, but he holds back.
Steve wonders, but he doesn't press. He's told Lando he can ask for anything, it's Steve's job to tell him no when he needs to. Still, he finds Lando biting his tongue, assuming an ask is too much, that it might be a line Steve doesn't want to cross.
Steve remembers the handoff meeting with Rich, the hangdog look. It isn't Steve's place to judge, but his opinion has always been nobody can force you across a line you aren't already willing to cross. He thinks about the set-up of the afternoon - an invitation at once shockingly intimate and carefully impersonal. People driving to a golf course in the middle of nowhere just for Lando.
"Max is busy," Lando had said. How many of his closest relationships were with people who felt like they owed him something?
Beside him in the car, Lando’s knee is bouncing non-stop.
"Anything you don't want today?" Steve asks. The people on the list know the rules, but he's more than willing to make modifications.
Lando shakes his head.
"Anything you do want?" Steve prods, half teasing.
Lando exhales a burst of laughter, shakes his head again. He looks a bit chagrined when he speaks.
"Sorry, I'm," he gestures towards his head, gives Steve a lopsided smile. "Thank you for putting this together," he says.
"Organizing orgies is probably a more common part of this job then you'd think," Steve replies, mostly for the way Lando laughs again and wrinkles his nose.
"It's not an orgy," Lando protests. "Too much coordination. Threesome max, I think."
Steve snorts. "I'll keep that in mind," he says. His watch buzzes. "Alright, tee time."
the shape of him... (x) more gifs below bc this very short video made me insane

Agonizing over a man and trying to render him cutely meanwhile he’s having the fuckboi summer of his life
me: read 50 books in 25 weeks
also me: omg i need to read more books
hello hello!! two questions for you from the book ask game:
is there a series/book that got you into reading?
what sections of a bookstore do you browse?
7. is there a series/book that got you into reading?
this is a difficult question for me, because in my memory i've always been a reader. there was never any book/series that made me a reader. when i was a kid, i read so much at the public library, i even got a prize because i was the person who borrowed the most books 😭 but just for fun, let me add some photos of books/series i remember reading when i was probably around 10-15 years old!
the elisabeth series by hilda stahl // eva & adam by måns gahrton
nancy drew!! by carolyn keene
w.i.t.c.h. (omg im getting nostalgic)
i tried to ask my mom if she remembers anything, and she was like "well, i don't know, you read everything we had in the house, probably books you were way too young to read as well, but you just read whatever" which reminded me that i read the books about ayla and jondalar by jean m. auel when i was like 14-15 too and.. wow.
for the book asks:
4. what sections of a bookstore do you browse? 9. when do you tend to read most?
thank you! 💕
4. what sections of a bookstore do you browse?
i mean... all of them? 😭 but i usually start at the fantasy or sci/fi shelves! also the stationary aisles!
9. when do you tend to read most?
i read all year around, but i do perhaps read more during christmas break and summer break. but i usually do most of my reading in bed before i sleep. like yes, i have been up till 2am just to finish a really good book, sleep be damned.

2 for book asks?? 👀
2. top 5 books of all time?
omg you can't just ask me this...... but okay, five books in no particular order:
the hunger games by suzanne collins
the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy by douglas adams
six of crows by leigh bardugo
odinsbarn (odin's child) by siri pettersen
bli hvis du kan. reis om du må by helga flatland not translated into english :(
15 and 19 ally! 💜
15. recommend and review a book.
writing reviews is my weak point </3 but i will try!
I want to recommend The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley. Historical fiction? Check. Magical realism? Check. Very intricate clockwork? Check. A clairvoyant with a mechanical octopus? Check. Two men falling in love, one slowly, one like he has already been in love for 20 years? Check!
19. most disliked popular books?
Well, I don't enjoy Sarah J. Maas' Throne of Glass series, and her other series are also really popular (still, somehow) and while I haven't read other books by her, I can only imagine... Also, anything by Colleen Hoover, lol.
