Artfight round up 4!
The Flash is fun when his superpower was 'he can run fast', and only becomes less interesting when you learn that ACTUALLY his power is that his cells have a connection to another dimension called the Speedforce, which is made out of the platonic idea of going fast which he can then channel through his body, and sometimes there's ghosts in it.
It begs the question, do ALL metahuman powers come from a dimension made out of their basic concept? Is Captain Boomerang really good at boomerangs because he can channel boomerang energy from the boomerang zone? Does this week's zero-creativity metahuman whose power is that they can shoot CGI beams have a connection to the Beam Realm?
And then the writers really start running out of ideas and we get shit like the negative speedforce, the artificial speedforce, the stillforce, which serve only so the supporting characters can say braindead shit like 'if we channel protons through the negative speedforce and trace the anti-tachyons we can quantum entangle him with dark matter', and it all just makes you think, this show really had no business going on for 9 seasons.
Also right why doesn't the Flash ever just run up to the villain and put on meta dampening cuffs? There isn't ONE storyline in this show that couldn't be solved by just instantly doing that but noooo, he HAS to have a stilted conversation with every villain he meets and then get hit by an energy wave and thrown through glass, which he could EASILY avoid but just doesn't.
This show's been rubbish for like 6 seasons now, but I think I'll miss it when it finally ends at the end of this current season. I can't deny it does compel me to see what depths it'll reach next. It's prime head-empty television.
Now Batwoman, there was a truly noxious show.
The Flash finale was truly feeble.
True, I don't have many expectations of any show's 9th season but somehow The Flash still managed to limbo right underneath them. First of all, the Flash is barely in it. Half the season has been the tedious C-team ditzing around with their aDoRkAbLe dialogue that sounds like the writer's been awake for four days straight but the caffine tablets aren't doing the job any more.
Cecile doesn't suit leather trousers at all. She looks like an embarrassing mum escorting her teenage son to his first biker bar. Also her superhero name is Virtue which is, I'm sorry, a hopelessly shit name. And surprise surprise, her new power is CGI beams. Except, there was a scene where they just didn't add in the effect, so for one shot her power was lethal pointing.
Every other scene this season has been Cecile getting told by Esperanza 'you're a badass superhero'. That exact phrase, repeated endlessly, to the point that it loses what precious little meaning it had in the first place. Also I'm sorry again but she isn't badass; her main power is that she gets a funny feeling sometimes. Also also it's weird that she flips between being a forty-something working mum and a twenty-something frat girl living it up with her roommates.
All the Speedster villains come back and instantly get killed. Good way to completely nullify them as threats.
As for the giant epic final confrontation, Barry politely asks the villain to stop it and he just does. That's it. The end. Also, it was nice for the final season to decide to have a main villain in the final 4 episodes even if it was a rock lodged into a guy's hand.
Chester gets black hole powers but we never get to see them nor learn what that even means (but they 100% would have been CGI beams). Every time Chester and Esperanza share the screen they have the chemistry of a dollop of protoplasm splodged onto a damp piece of cardboard. But I shan't say which is the dollop and which is the cardboard...
There's a flash forward to the future (All Good Things style) but I guess they didn't have the budget for old age makeup so everyone looks the same even though it's 25 years later.
It's baffling to me that Barry and Iris would meet and speak to their future daughter and still decide to give birth to her.
In the final scene, Barry selects 3 new speedsters for reasons which are left entirely unclear, without consulting or even meeting them. Also, I CANNOT stress enough that even though the show treats these characters like we know who they are, they've never appeared before. Maybe one of them was a guest star in one episode five seasons ago? I look forward to their pilot episode not getting picked up if it even gets made at all which it almost certainly won't.
Again, next to no expectations for a show this overlong and out of ideas but did they just not care about their big final act? A bafflingly limp way to end a show that's been going for 9 years.
Also there's a character called Kehone who's a nature Goddess or something but who cares.
Other than that it was a masterpiece.
One final note: s/o to the worst wig I've ever seen
