"Bro." Anthony said as his voice cracked. Standing in the doorway to enter his brothers room Anthony stood there, terrified. "Can we talk?" He asked as he made his way into his brother's room. "Dude, what's going on? You look like you're about to pass out." JD said jokingly as he nudged his brother on the shoulder. Anthony just stood there, then taking a seat on JD 's bed. Sitting there Anthony's leg began to shake tapping his left foot on the floor. Clasping his hands together Anthony looked down on the floor then looking out the window, then looking out the doorway to leave his brother's room. Anthony was looking anywhere but at his brother as Anthony didn't know where to start or if he wanted to continue the conversation. "Dude, you're scaring me, what's up Anthony?" JD asked as Anthony finally looked at his brother, looking him straight in the eyes. "JD." Anthony said with his voice cracking again. "Tony, what's going on? You know you can tell me anything. Right?" With his fingers still clasped together Anthony began to fiddle his fingers looking down at the floor. "Whatever you have to tell me can't be that bad. Can it? It's not like you got arrested or anything is it?"
Anthony knew at a very young age that he was into the same sex as he remembers being attracted to men at the age of five. Thinking it was normal Anthony remembers as if it was yesterday asking his mother if it was normal. "Mamma." "Yes, sweetheart." "There's this boy I like at school, his name is Sam, he has these gorgeous blue eyes, very attractive." Anthony said with a huge smile his eyes widening. "Oh, you mean a girl? I bet she does have very beautiful blue eyes. What's her last name? Samantha what?" "No! Momma! Sam is a boy, silly." Anthony continued still with a smile on his face. His mother placed him in the shopping cart, both making their way into Target. "Quit talking like that, Anthony. I think you are confused. You're not into the same sex, you are just confused and there is probably a girl named Sam that you like. I can't wait to meet her. Shall we invite her for a playdate?" Elizabeth said as Anthony nodded and left the conversation at that. Anthony sat in the cart looking around, staring his mother in her eyes, the smile on his face disappearing.
Anthony wasn't confused as he knew who he liked and what sex he liked. It appeared his mother didn't want to hear what Anthony had to say as he never brought up liking the same sex again not knowing how his siblings would handle the truth. His own mother didn't want to hear the truth as she just played it off and ignored the situation. His own mother who was supposed to protect him, to be there for him, she wasn't. Elizabeth didn't want to hear what Anthony had said, denying the person he was, telling him he was wrong for feeling the way he was making him seem like he was confused and didn't know what he was talking about. Anthony knew exactly who he was and if he had to hide who he was from his family, then so be it.
The conversation Anthony was about to have with his brother was the first conversation he'd had about his sexual orientation since he was five with his mother. "No. No, nothing like that, I've never been arrested a day in my life." Anthony said jokingly as he soon became completely quiet. "Anthony, what the hell is going on with you? You've never acted like this before." JD said pausing, taking a seat next to Anthony, placing an arm around him. "I thought we could tell each other everything. What's going on little brother?" Anthony took a deep breath in, letting it out through his mouth leaning his head on JD 's shoulder.
It was quiet between the two for a moment. Anthony took another deep breath in, then sighing. "I'M GAY." Anthony blurted out as JD didn't say anything for a moment, as it felt like a lifetime to Anthony. "That's it?" JD replied as Anthony was surprised by his reaction a bit confused with Anthony thinking it was going to be worse. "Dude, you're still MY brother and I'm going to love you no matter what. Our relationship isn't going to change just because you're gay. I'm always going to be here for you Anthony, remember that." JD said hugging Anthony tighter as the two sat there for a few minutes.
That day Anthony realized he could always count on his brother and their bond would only get stronger no matter how many miles apart they were. Anthony realized their brotherhood was something he would never take for granted and knew he was glad he had JD for a brother with their relationship only getting better.
