Sunlight streamed through the windows like the world was apologizing for every cloudy day that had ever existed. Aurora was already in shorts and sunglasses before she even had coffee, buzzing around Miloâs Apartment as she shoved sunscreen and beach towels into a tote bag.
Milo watched her from the couch, hair still messy from sleep, one sock on and holding a banana like it was a phone.
âBug,â he said seriously, into the banana. âYouâve packed six different snacks and zero water.â
She didnât look up. âSnacks are more emotionally stabilizing than hydration.â
âPretty sure thatâs not medically sound.â
âNeither is talking into a banana.â
âTouchĂŠ.â

By the time the group arrived at the beachâNick hauling the worldâs most complicated umbrella, Peyton carrying a speaker, and Rainbow complaining about sand getting in her shoesâthe sun was in full command of the sky.
Aurora and Rainbow wasted no time laying out towels and collapsing into the warm sand while the rest set up for volleyball nearby.
âAlright,â Rainbow said, applying lip balm like it was a mission, âgive me the drama. I know youâve got manager tea.â
Aurora snorted. âOh, you know I do. So, one of her other clients, like⌠absolutely refuses to audition for anything she sends.â
âWhy?â
âBecause apparently âindie horror isnât her vibeâ and âperiod dramas donât align with her personal brand.ââ
Rainbow blinked. âIs she⌠okay?â
Aurora shrugged. âShe said, and I quote, âif Iâm not playing the next Marvel lead, Iâm not wasting my time.ââ
Rainbow nearly choked on her water. âBABE.â
âI know. Meanwhile, Iâd audition to be a silent background tree in a medieval drama if it meant getting on set.â
âLiterally same,â Rainbow agreed. âPut me in a mossy wig, call me âTree #4,â Iâm there.â
They both burst into laughter, high-pitched and unbothered as they sprawled across their towels, tossing occasional commentary at the others fighting over volleyball rules like children.
Eventually, Milo jogged over, shirtless, sandy, and sweaty, flopping directly onto Aurora like he was auditioning to be a weighted blanket.
âEwwwww,â she groaned, smacking his chest with her beach hat. âGet OFF, youâre gross.â
He just nuzzled into her shoulder. âThatâs not very nice.â
âNeither is this human puddle situation.â
âShh,â he mumbled, eyes closed. âYouâre my pillow now.â
She rolled her eyes and let him stay, Rainbow grinning like sheâd just won a bet with herself.
Milo, clearly content, began fiddling with Auroraâs necklace, twisting it gently between his fingers while the girls resumed their conversation like he wasnât there.
After a while, Milo sighed dramatically. âIâm bored.â
âThen go swim,â Aurora suggested without looking at him.
âCome swim with me, Bug,â he coaxed, nudging her side.
âI donât want to get my hair wet,â she replied, adjusting her sunglasses.
âBugâŚâ
âI said no. My hair is having a good day.â
âIâll fix it after.â
âYouâre not certified in curls.â
He paused. âThatâs a good point⌠but Iâm still dragging you in.â
âWhatâMilo, donâtâMILO!â
He scooped her up in one swift movement, tossing her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes while she shrieked loud enough to draw attention from the entire beach.
âMilo! Put me down!â she shrieked, pounding her fists against his back.
Rainbow laughed, pulling out her phone to capture the moment. âThis is gold.â
Milo grinned, carrying Aurora toward the water. âLast chance to come willingly.â
âI swear, Milo, if youââ
They went under. Came up. Splashing and shoving water at each other like kids.
âYouâre actually the worst,â she said, blinking salt out of her eyes.
âYou love me,â he replied with a grin, launching a wave straight into her face.
On the shore, Rainbow and Payton sat with sunglasses and snacks, watching the chaos unfold like it was a reality show.
âHow are they not together?â Nick asked, biting into his chips.
Rainbow shook her head. âDelusional levels of denial. Textbook.â
âTheyâre, like, aggressively adorable.â
âTheyâre tragically in love.â
âHow can they be in this much denial about their feelings for each other?â Peyton mused.
Nick chuckled. âItâs like watching a rom-com in real life.â
After what felt like forever of playful dunking, chasing, and shrieking, Aurora and Milo finally trudged out of the water, dripping and grinning. Auroraâs hair was a wet mess, and Milo looked entirely too pleased with himself.
âSee that was fun!â
âYouâre so annoying.â
As the sun began to dip lower in the sky, the group gathered their belongings. Peyton turned to them with a smile. âDinner at my place tonight? Iâve got a new recipe I want to try.â
Everyone agreed, and they parted ways to prepare for the evening.

Aurora stood in front of the mirror in Miloâs flat, towel-drying her hair. She rummaged through her bag, realizing sheâd left her favorite dress at home.
âHey, Milo,â she called out. âThink you could swing by my place so I can grab my dress for tonight?â
Milo leaned against the doorway, arms crossed. âWhy donât you just borrow one of my shirts? Oversized is in.â
Aurora raised an eyebrow. âAs tempting as that sounds, Iâd prefer my own clothes.â
âAlright! Which one?â He asked grabbing her door keys from her bag
âThe black satin one it should be on the back of my chair.â She said as he headed for the door
She told herself it was just dinner with friends, nothing fancy, nothing serious. But her hands still trembled slightly as she fastened the dainty necklace Milo had helped her untangle that morning.
A knock echoed through the apartment, followed by the familiar creak of her door swinging open. âBug?â Miloâs voice rang out, playful and casual. âI come bearing dress retrieval success.â
âIn here!â she called, not turning away from the mirror.
He strolled in, holding her purse and a bottle of water like a delivery guy who took tips in compliments.
âShout me when youâre dressed.â
Milo quickly scurried out of the room leaning her to get dressed as quickly as she should. Auroras hands ran up and down the dress as she smoothed out the wrinkles
âMi!â She called out
He paused when he entered the bedroom, mid-step, his words catching in his throat.
Aurora met his eyes in the mirror.
And he froze.
Milo stood there for a beat too long, eyes sweeping over her from the bare arch of her shoulders down to the soft swish of the dress around her thighs. It wasnât a romantic moment with dimmed lights and violins playing â it was quiet, golden, and completely unguarded. His mouth parted like he wanted to say something, but no sound came out.
âToo much?â she asked, smoothing the front of the dress nervously.
His eyebrows shot up. âToo much? Bug, you just broke time. Like, I think I blacked out for a second.â
She rolled her eyes, trying to ignore the way her cheeks warmed. âBe serious.â
âI am,â he said, stepping into the room, gaze still fixed. âYou look⌠wow.â
âWow?â
He laughed a little under his breath, shaking his head like he still couldnât get over it. âYeah. Like, actual âwow.â Like, Iâm sorry to our neighbors because I might yell about it in the hallway.â
She gave him a suspicious look. âYou sure itâs not just the fact youâve been living off protein bars and set catering and forgot what a person in clean clothes looks like?â
âHa. Ha.â He held out the purse. âYou look amazing. Like, hold-my-breath kind of amazing.â
Aurora took the bag, trying to hide her smile as she grabbed her shoes from beside the bed and slipped them on. âYou clean up alright yourself, you know.â
âIâm wearing jeans and a T-shirt.â
âExactly. Your peak.â
He put a hand to his heart. âYou wound me.â
She stood and grabbed her denim jacket from the chair, throwing it on. âReady to go?â
âNot even a little bit. Iâm still recovering from the dress reveal.â
âMilo.â
âIâm just saying, I may need to take a minute to emotionally process.â
She laughed, brushing past him, and he followed right behind her, still smiling like a goof.

Later that night, Milo and Aurora arrived at Peytonâs apartment. Milo had driven them there, the car ride filled with their usual banter and shared glances. Peyton had gone all out, her flat adorned with twinkling fairy lights and a beautifully set table that exuded warmth and charm. She had taken care to set the table with dinner plates, salad plates, and an appetizer plate, ensuring each setting had a water goblet and a wine glass, following advice from seasoned hosts.
Dinner was loud and hilarious before anyone even finished their drinks. The stories flowed like the wine, and somehow it all led to:
âNo, no, please let me tell this one,â Kristian said, already wheezing. âSo, I had an audition last week. Straightforward, chillâuntil the scene partner goes, âNow pretend youâre a chicken.ââ
Everyone burst out laughing.
âWhat?!â Nick gasped.
âA CHICKEN,â Kristian repeated. âI was in the middle of this super emotional monologue and suddenly I had to start clucking and flapping.â
âIâm crying,â Aurora said, wiping her eyes.
âI didnât even ask why,â Kristin said. âI just committed. Squatted down. Did the full chicken strut. They stared at me in silence for ten seconds and said, âThatâll do.ââ
âI need that tape,â Milo said, half-choking on his drink. âFor science.â
âOh!â Milo added, mouth still full of bread. âDid I ever tell you guys about the time I walked in on Aurora performing Red by Taylor Swift like it was a full-blown concert?â
âMILO.â
âShe was spinning with a hairbrush. Literal tears in her eyes.â
âIt was an emotional day!â
âDidnât even notice I was there for, like, three minutes.â
Aurora covered her face. âKill me now.â
Peyton added between laughs, âAt least youâve got that you found him talking to your teddy bear like it owed him rent.â
Aurora pointed a dramatic finger. âThat happened.â
âEXCUSE ME,â Milo defended. âLou was asleep and I was venting.â
âSo I came back to my trailer after filming one night, and Lou is asleep on the couch. Iâm like, âwhereâs Milo?â Then I hear himâtalking to my teddy bear.â
Kristian nearly fell off his chair. âNo.â
âHeâs all, âDude, I donât know what to do with her. Sheâs chaos. But like, good chaos. Like⌠if chaos wore perfume.ââ
Milo groaned. âI was workshopping emotions, okay?â
âMore like confessing them,â Rainbow muttered.
âTo a teddy.â
âHeâs a good listener!â
Then Peyton laughed, pointing at Aurora. âDonât even! You woke up thirty minutes before call one day and told everyone you were on the phone with your doctor.â
The room exploded.
âBUG!â Nick shouted.
âIn my defense,â Aurora said, dramatically sipping her wine, âyou guys made me drink the night before.â
âYouâre awful,â Milo said through laughter.
âIâm efficient.â
Everyone was dying of laughter, even Spencer, who rarely cracked more than a grin, groaning, âYou two give me a migraine.â
Aurora raised her glass. âCheers to that.â
Later, when they were still sitting around in cozy piles, Miloâs phone buzzed. He glanced down, read the message, and his smile faltered.
âEverything okay?â Aurora asked.
He nodded slowly. âYeah. They need me back in New York. Day after tomorrow.â
There was a long pause. Nick was the one who said it.
âDamn. You just got back.â
Aurora didnât say a word. Her face stayed neutral, but she didnât rejoin the conversation right away. Her hand dropped from Miloâs arm.
The others chatted around it, trying to shift the mood, but her silence clung to him like a shadow.
⸝
Back at their building, they walked quietly down the hall, Aurora unlocking her door with robotic motions.
âBug,â Milo said gently, âtalk to me.â
She paused, halfway inside. âItâs so shit.â
He followed her in, closing the door softly behind him. âI know.â
âI justââ she flopped onto the couch, curling into herself, ââwe finally have time to just⌠be. And now youâre leaving again.â
Milo crossed the room and sat beside her, their knees touching. âItâs not forever.â
âI know.â Her voice cracked. âBut it feels like it every time.â
âIâll come back.
âYou always say that.â
âAnd I always do.â
She smiled, watery-eyed. âI hate that I miss you before you even go.â
Milo leaned his head on hers. âIâll miss you before I even land.â
They sat there, the quiet between them filled with the things they didnât need to say out loud.
And even if the next few days would go too fast, at least they had now.
