Analyse the characters, postulate on where the story might go, and for the love of everything, leave the players* alone.
If you don’t agree with what they’re doing and feel you can’t trust them, shut up and trust the DM (director, editor, etc). Or you know what? You could always stop engaging with that piece of media entirely. No one wants to hear about your hate boner for the minority person of the week you’ve fixated on (in Critical Role it seems it’s always one of the women, the coloured people, or the openly queer ones being attacked. Funny how the white men** can do the same things and be cheered on as being brave).
I’m glad I’m not famous, or even well known. I couldn’t deal with being driven offline. Or insane. Or further into my self hate shell.
*This could be actors, writers, authors, etc, but in this case it’s Critical Role, and ye gods are people being critical in the bad way.
**Unless you’re the DM of the new campaign and not Matt Mercer. Then you’re going to be flayed alive.

It’s kind of sad really. I haven’t written anything now since… gee, it has to be nigh on three months now, I think. Certainly two. I’ve put in a couple of notes here and there, but otherwise haven’t felt inspired enough by anything to actually get out the computer and write. But until last night I was still turning over plots, so it wasn’t abandoned yet.

Spoilers for Baldur’s Gate 3
Spoilers for Critical Role Campaign 4 (they really need to name this bugger)
That’s not the sad bit I’m referring to, sad as it is.
Please note that was in the opening paragraph. Was still turning over plots. Was. Until last night when two AUs decided to kick me in the head.
I’ve been playing Baldur’s Gate 3, and as I noted in another post, I made silly characters based on Taldjen and Solen, my lead characters in my original world. They’re not exact - how could they be with no mods on (trying to get Steam achievements) and restricted to D&D classes and races, but it’s close enough to make me snicker and kick my feet a bit, especially when Tali goes off and acts like a slut sleeps with members of his party.
As a part of Baldur’s Gate 3 you make a guardian character as well as the player character, so of course I made their guardian characters the other - Talizen got a Solen clone, whilst Sulan got a Taldjen. This made Talizen’s first dream sequence quite a shock as I was going into it blind.
Cue the kick in the head. I wondered what would happen if these two characters, having dream guardians based on each other, actually met and realised they weren’t actually dreaming of each other, but of something using their likenesses.
Do they actually know each other and it’s being suppressed? They can’t deny their attraction to one another, it’s like a compulsion. But is that because of the dream guardians, or was it pre-existing? Why would anything want them together, or is it instinct to actually find a way to save each other and themselves?
Given Baldur’s Gate 3 is a bit dark, my mind then drifted into my current obsession - Critical Role’s Campaign 4.
Cue the second kick in the head.
Their story would be similar to my original story just after she escaped being Crystaled and Taldjen had to search for her (I know this means absolutely nothing to anyone but me, but it gives an idea without actually revealing much about that actual plot if I ever continue it), except she has been living amongst the fae in Dol-Makjar and he has only just come into the city.
Neither are actually human, but present that way.
He hears of the huge theatrical production being held at the Hallowed Round and knows that even if she’s in hiding, she wouldn’t resist attending such an event, so he goes there looking for her, but gets a bit distracted by the spectacle and by trying not to obscure the view of people behind him.
It’s actually her that stumbles across him as she’s returning to her seat after buying a drink and some fruit leather. I don’t remember what she said to him right now*, but she invites him to join her closer to the stage.
The rest is based on conjecture of the next couple of episodes of CR, but if the Candescent Creed troops do arrive to try to arrest the troupe, they’re going to help resist with the Magpies and fae; no small threat given they’re both skilled arcanists and not entirely mortal.
Normally a storyline involving special snowflakes like this pair makes me cringe, but I love them so much, and they’re so broken in their different ways that it hopefully balances the power they latently hold. It sucks to be immortal if you’re not happy and don’t really want to be alive.
These probably won’t be written either as it feels like a betrayal of the original material to me, but it’s really interesting, as well as sad.
*I remember now. It was a whisper of, “You’re still beautiful.” He shouldn’t have heard it over the noise of the theatre, but of course he did. For all that I say that I hate romances, I’m such a sap.
What I’m doing regarding hybrids in my writing. Or interspecies … erm … connections. Hopefully not too bad or misinterpretable of an idea.
Tumblr just ate my opening paragraph. I am really peeved as I don’t remember how I started this wall of text anymore. I am Displeased. So I’ll give it another go knowing it won’t be as good and concise as it was.
I’m a pedantic bugger. I’ve always known it, and tend to get stuck on the literal meaning of words and terms. That’s why the notion of half-race characters in science fiction and fantasy stories irks me.
I adore the themes and systematic societal problems the existence of these characters explore, but when it comes to the genetics, I screech to a disbelieving halt, especially when I first started exploring speculative fiction. If humans cannot directly breed with chimpanzees, our closest genetic relatives, how can we reproduce without intervention with people from other species, other planets*, or even other planes of existence? The existence in stories of these hybrids existing, especially from rape backgrounds, I find highly questionable.
The problem is the fact that the word “race” is used where “species” is more appropriate. Race would be Wood Elves as opposed to High Elves, but species would be Human versus Dwarf.
At least, that’s the one thing that has always itched the back of my mind. Being an avid reader of fantasy and science fiction over these last 40 years means that it’s not a huge irritant, more like a faint twitch, but I always thought that if I made my own world, there wouldn’t be interbreeding between the species. A lot of them wouldn’t even have compatible genitalia, if they even had genitalia at all. Why wouldn’t merpeople have cloacas? Why would plant or rock people have genitals at all? Perhaps flowers and sepals - better not be allergic to pollen!
But would readers see this as supporting racism, as thinking that separation was a good thing? Definitely not the thought here as there is still interspecies hanky-panky, there’s just no unexpected children resulting from it, and in some cases you have to get really creative, or in at least one case, like pain (or not care about inflicting it, but that leads to nasty thoughts I don’t want to think about).
I dunno, it’s been a world building thing I incorporated into my latest story’s world, but as with everything about it lately I’m very vulnerable about it and starting to think it’s a really bad idea.
*Star Trek: TNG attempted to explain this in The Chase, establishing that all humanoid races were seeded with one humanoid race’s DNA “seed code,” but I still say bleh.
Ok, so making the guardian of my BG3 characters based on my story characters based on their story love interests seems to have been a really bad idea for them, but an excellent one for angst. Heh.
