“Watch your ass, do you know how hard I slaved over those burgers? I had to wait in line at the diner for almost five minutes to get that shit for you.” Tucker leaned into the arms of the other man, closing his eyes as he relaxed into the feeling of being safe in the other’s arms. Aiden smiled into their kiss, feeling like things had returned to ‘normal’ between him and Tucker, whatever that word meant. The past had frightened him, but what was he to do? Keep running? Never be with anyone? That had been the idea moving out here, but now Tucker was laying his head in his lap, and he didn’t want to be anywhere else but right there with him.

Tucker curled himself into Aiden’s side as he sat down, tucking his face against the other’s neck. There was a slight tremor to his hands as he gripped onto the other Beta, but slowly he seemed to be coming down from the adrenaline and fear. His breathing started to deepen as his throat relaxed. He was quiet as he listen to the other talk about what had happened earlier that day, shaking his head a little bit as a raspy chuckle left his lips. 

“My life is already pretty shit and you’ve done nothing but make it better…” The noirette sat up after a moment and sighed. “I hate this emotional bullshit, I suck at it…but there are maybe three people in this whole world that I can stand but you’re one of them. I’m not afraid of shit getting bad I just want my family to stay with my ass while I go through it. Oh and Aiden…” 

The Beta smiled softly and pulled a hand back to punch the other wolf in the shoulder. “Don’t fucking be a dick like that anymore.” 

Aiden kept his arms wrapped around Tucker, feeling the impulse to protect him with everything he had. If someone were to come through the door right now looking for trouble, they would be met with an uncontrollable fury, and perhaps that should have been frightening, but instead, it felt empowering. It felt heady and he had to wonder if this was how Alphas felt all the time.

Tucker leaned into the hand petting through his hair and sighed out shakily. “I do owe you something…I was so fucking god damn unhappy all the time and now I’m…I’m okay. Between you and Will I feel fucking okay and I forgot how fucking great okay was.” He sighed heavily and looked back up at the other Beta, weighing his options of what he could say. 

Food and coffee and booze just didn’t appeal to him, unsure of his ability to keep it down right now while he was stressed. He cocked his head to the side, stretching out his neck muscles for a moment before he opened his mouth and softly said. “I don’t know how cool it is to say this sober but…I kind of just want you…” 

Aiden gave a little half chuckle before plopping down on the sofa beside Tucker, wrapping an arm around his shoulders. “Well I’m right here. And I ain’t goin’ anywhere.” He rubbed the other Beta’s shoulder, and in a moment of weakness, gave in to the desire to lean in and kiss him, soft and slow, like they had that drunken night.

Aiden’s arms wrapped around Tucker, holding him close, but gingerly, careful not to hurt him more than he already was. “Then don’t.” He urged, tilting his head down and burying his nose in Tucker’s hair. “Don’t do it anymore. Do something else. Fuck, I’ll help you look for another job if you want.”

“I hope he is…I’ll tell them you saved me…I won’t let bad things happen to you.” Tucker was almost like a doll as he was dressed, only moving as he needed to get his pants on. Aiden stopped for a moment when Tucker mentioned taking him back to the condo he shared with Will, rather than bringing him to Aiden’s apartment. He hadn’t realized, but when he said he was going to take Tucker home, he had meant back to his own apartment. He began walking again to the Uber he had called for while dressing Tucker.

“...I’m gonna take you back to my place.” Aiden replied decisively, setting Tucker in the Uber and sliding in beside him. “Dunno where anything is in that big, fancy fuckin’ place. I’ll take you to mine and make you some eggs or something.” He wrapped his arm around Tucker in the cab, determined to keep him close by. 

“Aiden…” Tucker’s eyes rolled in his head for a moment, as he tried to get oxygen flowing through his brain, his throat felt sore  and he knew there would be fresh bruises once the night was over. He coughed again, clinging to the fabric that was draped over his shoulders. He laughed a bit over someone covering him even now when it was his job to be nude. He shuddered and grabbed onto the man lifting him up, his gangly limbs barely supporting himself as he was led out of the back room. He sucked down greedy breaths and leaned heavily into Aiden’s side, pausing only long enough to land a kick to the Alpha’s side. 

“Aiden…f-fuck…thought…thought was busy…” His eyes fluttered as he was led to the locker rooms, dropping heavily onto the bench there. He pulled the jacket tighter around himself, eyes looking up at the fellow Beta, to afraid to hide his wide eyes. 

“Is he dead? Was he dead?” 

Aiden helped Tucker sit down and fumbled through the lockers until he found one with the other’s clothes. He started putting them on, unable to even enjoy the irony that usually he was yanking them off. “Dunno...” Aiden muttered, shaking his head as he tugged Tucker’s pants up and buttoned them. “I don’t think so...” 

Truth be told, he didn’t much care. He should have; he knew that. But he didn’t. If the bastard was dead, then he got what he deserved. Aiden wouldn’t be sorry. Tucker was growing to hate the backrooms with a passion. This felt like an eternity, barely awake and fighting for each breath, his fingers scrabbling for the panic button, just out of his reach and getting further as the client dragged him away from the wall. He tried to scream, to do anything…

He had always been strong, especially for a Beta, but this was something else.

His own name cut through the mania, but it wasn’t the word which caught his attention. It was the voice saying it. Aiden had crawled on top of the man and was beating him mercilessly, but he let him drop and scurried over to Tucker when he heard his voice.

Tucker blinked at the sudden sour expression, and the open and honest smile on his face collapsed into hurt of a half a second before it was schooled into his normal sarcastic mask. His grip on the bag tightened for a moment before he thrust the food into the other’s hands, glancing away. “Well…fucking…fine. You’re busy whatever…I can pick up a shift at the Howl or whatever.” Maybe Aiden actually was busy, or maybe he was being pushed away again. 

The Beta wasn’t so stupid to think that this was anything more than an attempt to shove him away. Just like when he’d tried to open up to Tristan. He closed himself off and pulled away. 

“He shoved the bag into the other’s arms and turned to head out, tossing up his hand. “Give me a call when you want a good time then.” 

The bag of greasy fast food may as well have been a knife shoved into his chest. Aiden had never felt so close with someone as he had Tucker, then it was gone in an instant. And it was his own fault. He had shoved him away, just like he’d done his family. But it ended up being for the better. He couldn’t take care of them. He could barely take care of himself.

Aiden returned inside and sat alone on his sofa, eating the food straight out of the bag and staring at nothing. He had nothing to do. No plans. It was his day off, and he didn’t even have a shift at the butcher shop to distract him. Usually getting to stab meat was always helpful in forgetting any problem. But no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t forget that instant of pain and betrayal in Tucker’s eyes.

That’s how he ended up at the Howl that night, looking around to all the stages, but watching nothing. He had tried to piece together what to say, but he didn’t have the words. Still, he needed to say something. So he went looking for Tucker, only to find he wasn’t there. Or wasn’t in the front, anyway. So he went to the back, looking in every room, heart racing more and more each time he walked in on someone that wasn’t Tucker.

He wasn’t expecting any company; he never was. People didn’t just come to his messy little apartment, so he could only assume it was someone selling something.

He opened the door in just his towel to find not only a familiar face, but one he felt a surge of joy to see. Tucker. He had spent long days and nights thinking about the other Beta after their times together, and more and more often lately he found himself wanting to see him.
