The Readers Mystery (Part 2)
On the Eve of the Deal -
“I need to know who she is,” said Lord Madrigold to Sir Wichert, his trusted Knight. “Ride out to the Mages tower and seek an answer. I need to know if she shares the truth.”
At first light, Sir Wichert road his mare, Midnight, north for hours until the temperature dropped to a freezing chill. At sunset, they saw the ground kissed with a frostbite of snow & ice as their heavy breaths turned visible. The paved path ended at the edge of a ravine where a silver mist clouded any sight of the ground below.
“I seek your great council, sacred mage!” Bellowed Sir Wichert. “I seek no harm and carry the seal of my lord for safe keeping.”
Whispers began to hiss throughout the mist until a clear voice spoke above the others, “Show me the seal and I will grant you passage across the mist.”
Sir Wichert upheld a silver medallion with three circles etched into the metal. The whispers continued to speak to each other until the white haze cleared and revealed an ice bridge.
Wary at first, the Knight rocked his horse backward then finally urged Midnight forward. She neighed with concern.
“It’ll be okay, girl.”
