Each Pokemon is picked for an explicit reason, and will be explained down below. For your convenience, I’ve put this under a read more just so it doesn’t stretch people’s dashes. And yes, their nicknames all mythology references.
MEGA HOUNDOOM ( Mors ) ♂ Lv. 42 Dex No. 229.
Identifiable by its eerie howls, people a long time ago thought it was the grim reaper and feared it. || Houndoom's entire body generates heat when it Mega Evolves. Its fearsome fiery breath turns its opponents to ash.
I chose this because of its Pokedex entries and my association of Will with Death personified. Reapers in some mythos stories are known for turning to ash on death, and reapers in general are associated with ash as a form of decay.
MIGHTYENA ( Cerberus ) ♀ Lv. 36 Dex No. 262.
Mightyena travel and act as a pack in the wild. The memory of its life in the wild compels the Pokémon to obey only those Trainers that it recognizes to possess superior skill.
If you truly think about it, Will in canon and all of his dogs are, in fact, a pack in their own way. They are closely-knit and share a very admirable bond with one another, but Will also follows most of what Hannibal says because he recognizes Hannibal as a superior.
ARCANINE ( Fenrir ) ♂ Lv. 46 Dex No. 059.
There are so many old tales about them that they're called legendary Pokémon, but there are way more of them around than you'd expect.
I know I said I chose all of these Pokemon for good reasons, and Arcanine is no different. It’s a big dog that can carry Will around on its back. Literally what could be better than that?
ZOROARK ( Loki ) ♂ Lv. 44 Dex No. 571.
Bonds between these Pokémon are very strong. It protects the safety of its pack by tricking its opponents. || It doesn't just transform itself—it also has the power to make hundreds of people see its illusions.
This Pokemon goes well with Will’s empathy and also his transformation throughout the series. The way he changes himself, while simultaneously keeping a bit of the same person hidden deep below, is very akin to Zoroark’s illusory abilities. Not to mention that Will is protective of those he loves and cares about, sans Hannibal just because he can.
ALOLAN NINETALES ( Skadi ) ♀ Lv. 42 Dex No. 038.
The reason it guides people all the way down to the mountain's base is that it wants them to hurry up and leave. || Some said that deities visited mountains where Ninetales live, so in times long past, no one was allowed to go into those mountains.
Literally read the first PokeDex entry and tell me that isn’t Will. It literally leads people down to the mountain’s base so people will leave it alone. Not only that, but Ninetales is known for being psychic and extremely intelligent, which can sort of coordinate with Will’s high-functioning empathy. Ninetales could easily understand humans, and Will does the same, though he isn’t psychic.
DARKRAI ( Epiales ) ✖ Lv. 50 Dex No. 491.
It chases people and Pokémon from its territory by causing them to experience deep, nightmarish slumbers.
Moves Learned: Dark Void || Nightmare || Dark Pulse || Ominous Wind
Chosen for its tendencies to be avoidant of people and Pokemon, while also inducing sleep and nightmares to those it comes across, I found it perfect for Will. This is the only Pokemon he hasn’t physically caught, but rather it has latched itself onto him. It, again, tends to stay out of sight, but its presence alone is enough to instill nightmares to Will’s already unstable mind. It aids him every now and again.
