German Pronouns and Queerness

Note that I will be giving my personal opinion on the fact that there are no gender neutral pronouns to use in German, and my opinion is not law nor do you have to listen to me. I’m just going to talk about how I found a solution to this problem. As a side note it’s worth noting that this blog is lgbtq+ friendly and I don’t want any bigots following me, even if lgbtq+ is not the main topic of this blog.

So, the German language does not have any gender neutral pronouns - which sucks, it really does, and it’s not like we can use the formal or the plural ones either since they’re the same as the third person feminine singular: sie. So what to do?

Well the easiest solution would be to choose a preference from one of the existing third person singular: either er or sie depending on what you’re comfortable with. Another option would be to ask people to avoid using pronouns when talking about you and instead use your name. Some people might be open to use the English “they” as a pronoun when talking about you. Neo pronouns doesn’t always work as well in German as they do in English, unfortunately, so my best advice would be to use either “sie” or “er” when introducing yourself to strangers, and asking family and friends to use other pronouns. Of course this (like every other bit of advice here) is optional and you can choose to do otherwise.

I also know that a lot of jobs are gendered, to which my best advice is to use the version that you find more comfortable. But find some solace in the fact that the masculine version are starting to become more gender neutral nowadays (something that actually already happened in my own native language). Though that won’t happen in German until a good while.

Again, this is all just advice that doesn’t have to be followed and I’m sure there are different, and better solutions to every unique situation. I also know that this post won’t be as relevant to most people, but it was something I wanted to bring up since it was a part of my own learning experience.

I thought I would bring this post back now that it’s pride month. But I also felt that it’s worth adding that since then I have found out that there are unofficial gender neutral pronouns such as “xier/xies/xiesem” and “sif/dir/dif” but the rate of usage of these are still practically none, I just thought I would add that.

Grammatical Clauses

What is a grammatical clause? To properly understand sentence structure it is necessary to have a grasp of what this is. Of course, you could try to construct sentences without the knowledge - and it’s most likely that you already have an innate understanding without ever having known - but to get an understanding you have to have some knowledge around clauses. So, what is it?

A clause is a group of words that contain both a subject and a predicate.

By now, you should be familiar with what a grammatical subject is; the one or the ones executing the action or that is being described. Ex. He walked to her. (”He” is the subject.)

But what is a predicate? A predicate is the part that describes the subject; therefore it always includes a verb. Ex. He walked to her. (”walked to her” describes the subject’s action, and is the predicate)

More Clauses

There are many different types of clauses, but the most important to know about is the main clause and the subordinate clause - and it’s rather easy when you finally understand it.

The main clause is independent and can stand on it’s own and still make sense. : He ate the berries. (One main clause)

The subordinate clause is dependent and does not make sense on it’s own, it does not express a full thought. : He ate the berries, but still held a basket. (One main clause, one subordinate clause) The clause “still held a basket“ does not make sense on it’s own and need a main clause to make sense.

It’s also good to bring up that in German, main clauses and subordinate clauses are separated by a comma. As you’ll notice in the examples below.

Word Order

The word order in german clauses varies. The main clause normally have the word order “subject-verb-object” (SVO) but in a subordinate clause the word order change so the verb (or the auxiliary verb if one is present) suddenly comes last.

: Ich weiß es nicht, weil ich müde bin. [I don’t know, because I am tired.] : Du gehst nach Hause, weil er doof bin. [You are going home, because he is dumb.] : Wir wollen das kaufen, weil es notwendig ist. [We want to buy that, because it is necessary.]

Also - in German the subordinate clause can come before the main clause and the word order change then again, but this time in the main clause. The verb will then come after the comma. : Weil ich müde bin, weiß ich es nicht. [Because I am tired, I don’t know.]

The Nature of the German Pronoun (part 2)

Finally I get to release the follow up! Last time in this lil’ series of mine we talked about pronouns, specifically personal and possessive pronouns. This time we’ll take a look at the demonstrative pronouns and relative pronouns.

Usage

First it’s good to know exactly what demonstrative pronouns are and why we use them. Demonstrative pronouns are “these/those” and “this/that” and they are used to replace the noun so we don’t have to repeat ourselves when referring to them. Relative pronouns are the equivalent of “which” and is used in relative clauses (I can talk more about clauses in the future) and it allows us to be able to convey information about a noun without having to start a new sentence.

In German, they decline according to case, gender, and number (just like many other things).

Demonstrative pronouns

So there are a few different alternatives:

Dieses/Jenes This is used when referring to “this or that” (”dieses oder jenes”) and of course it declines accordingly:

Though in speech, it’s not unusual to say “die/der/das dort/da” instead of using jener/jenes/jene. Ex. “Willst du dieses essen? -Nein, lieber das dort.”

Das/Dasjenige/Dasselbe Is used to emphasise something: “Kennst du ihn? -Nein, den kenne ich nicht.” “Derjenige, der es kauft, bekommt es.“ “Hast du neue Tassen? -Nein, sie sind dieselben.“

Relative pronouns

Like previously mentioned, the relative pronouns are the equivalent of the english “which”. Ex. “I used a hat, which was moldy.”

A heads up and a reminder

Hey! This blog has been pretty consistently uploading 3 posts a week since I started it a couple of months ago. This week and next week (w.15 and w.16) however, due to personal reasons surrounding my mental health, I will only make 1-2 posts, one of which will be my totw. I know you are here for the language content, so I keep it restricted to the topics surrounding that. So just know that I’ll be back on my usual routine as soon as possible.

Also a reminder to take care of yourself. I know there are a lot to achieve, a lot to learn, and a lot to experience. But we can’t always give a hundred percent, and that’s okay. Stay safe, stay healthy.
