I didn't think I'd be one of those guys, but today I rode a pedal-assist bike - and liked it! The bike you see here is a Trek Lift+. It's a recreational bike running a 1x10 drivetrain and a Shimano STEPS pedal assist. Pedaling up hills and into headwinds on this bike is a total breeze! For those who say e-bikes are cheating, I hear you, but let me offer a couple counterpoints. 1) You're still pedaling this bike full time. STEPS simply amplifies your pedaling force. It flattens hills and puts a smile on your face. It's like having a string tailwind the whole time you ride. 2) I love mashing pedals and feeling the burn, but sometimes I just need to get somewhere. Groggy work mornings, nighttime commutes after a long day, running errands, picking huge loads of groceries, cruising into a headwind on the boardwalk - that's where this bike excels. 3) I've ridden mopeds, scooters, and motorcycles. That's not what this feels like. It feels like a bike. 4) Maybe not all the time, but maybe 80% of the time, an e-bike can replace your car for short trips. (This bike has a 50+ mile range, and it works like a normal bike when the battery dies.) We're going to be carrying two Trek pedal assist models at Agee's: the Lift+, shown here, and the Conduit+, features 700c wheels, integrated lighting, fenders, and a rear cargo rack - a complete commuting solution. We offer test rides, so if you're intrigued, come check one out!

Ride Report: GAP and C&O
2 relatively inexperienced touring cyclists, 2 bikes, 1 tent, and 360 miles of gravel in 7 days. If that sounds like your idea of a good time, read on.
Earlier this year, I asked Rachel how she felt about doing a week-long semi-off-road tour in the fall. I’d heard about the mythical DC to Pittsburgh ride from friends who had undertaken it in much larger groups. I’d seen the pictures. I’d heard rumblings among the retired road cyclist set. Most of all, I wanted to ride my bike and camp. The week of my birthday in mid-October sounded like the perfect opportunity.
A word about Rachel: Rachel is gung ho about everything. If you ask her if she can do something, she will say yes and take a good crack at it. That’s the kind of attitude that makes for happy traveling. Earlier this year, I asked Rachel if she wanted to ride bikes from Pittsburgh to DC, and she said yes.
Score.
I won’t bore my nonexistent readers with a day-by-day analysis, but here are some highlights.

Here’s a little ride report from my GAP/C&O tour in October. Got any adventures to tell us about? If so, let us know!

2016 Stache 29+, now in stock at Agee's. Who wants to go for a ride?
Customer bike from today. Custom Domane 6 series, now upgraded to Dura Ace C35s. And this bike is no wall ornament: the owner puts serious miles on this thing. Heck yeah!
At the cobbles of Libbie Hill
We were right on the primo line at Libbie Hill on Sunday. Please excuse my camera work - I was a little excited.

Governor Street
For those of you who missed it or just want to relive the experience, here’s a little taste of the UCI Worlds.
UCI Worlds, Virginia Capital Trail, and more!
I realize it looks like I’ve been slacking off. No posts for weeks on end? What’s going on??
The truth is we’ve been pretty busy through the summer months, and I spend most of my days in the shop running around and trying to keep everyone smiling. Srsly guys, I do it all for you.
But there have been pretty great things afoot. I don’t know if anyone out there heard about it, but there was this pretty cool thing that happened last week.
That’s right, the UCI Road World Championships in Richmond, VA!
We’ve been hearing worries and gripes for month that the entire city would be shut down, strangled to death by lycra-clad cyclists and bureaucratic ineptitude. Guess what? The UCI and the city of Richmond rose to the occasion. The carnival atmosphere at Sunday’s race was beautiful, and even if you don’t follow cycling, there’s nothing like seeing the pro peloton zoom through your own city.
Even if you missed the opportunity, we still have a few UCI commemorative water bottles:
It’s a pretty cool bottle that actually keeps your drink cold.
Those who were at the race might also appreciate this cap I picked up from the USA Cycling tent:
It’s a cobblestone! Get it?
Apparently they actually took photos of the cobblestones on Libbie Hill and used them as inspiration for caps. Please don’t ask where to get one now - I have no idea!
Today is the grand opening of the Virginia Capital Trail. Construction has been completed for at least a few weeks, but today it’s officially open. This trail goes all the way from Richmond to Jamestown, and except for the highway crossings, it’s completely separated from traffic. I doubt that many people will be riding in today’s rainy weather, but make it a point to check it out as soon as you can!
Being a guy who works at an establishment that sells and services bicycles, it’s only proper that I should acquire a new bike from time to time. Here’s my latest acquisition, a Trek 520.
Preliminary testing indicates that this bike is super sweet. It’s exactly what I need for commuting, touring, etc., and it’s about to be put through its paces on the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal trail.
#BearWitness
You’ve seen the leaked photos and heard the rumors. Today Trek is introducing not just a single super-bike but a handful of potentially earth-shaking machines. Things are looking good! http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/events/bear_witness/
New shoes in the shop Monday: the Bontrager Velocis men's and Meraj women's road shoes. Both feature stuff a stiff carbon sole, the Boa IP1 dial, and Lightning Mesh panels that light up when hit with a bright light. Cool! The men's shoe comes in the awesome Radioactive Pink pictured above. I tried my best, but believe me, the photos don't do it justice. (More subdued colors available for the non-pink-inclined.)
Getting weird with 700x28 hybrid tires on the Trek Émonda ALR 6.
…and they said it was impossible.
Since we received the Émonda ALR, the pressing question on my mind has been whether it fits 28s. As of yesterday, that question has been answered conclusively with a resounding YES. I squeezed some 700x28 Bontrager H2 tires onto the Émonda ALR 6 at 80 or so PSI with room to spare.
Why 28s? For one thing, it’s a much cushier ride. Perhaps more importantly, this opens up the possibility of riding on dirt and gravel with this super-light high-performance road bike. That’s great news if you don’t want to be confined to pristine asphalt surfaces!
Also of interest: these tires managed to clear Ultegra 6800 brakes on the Bontrager Race rims, which are pretty wide. With 105 brakes, which are less overbuilt around the pivots, you should get even more clearance, Clarence!

Feel the need for speed? We’ve got you covered, with everything from the $439.99 SE Royale to the super-light Émonda SL. Be fast!
Check out this description of the Émonda ALR on Bike Rumor. We have these bikes in stock, and let me tell you, they ride beautifully in both Ultegra and 105 trim. If you're thinking of a new road bike, come by and give one of these a try - you won't be disappointed. These bikes blow my mind with a far better ride than I'd expect from an aluminum road bike. Personally, I like it even more than the Émonda S. I'm even considering picking one up!
