Synopsis: You're just a pretty princess in a pretty castle when a stranger with red hair and a black coat shows up in your bedroom. The storybooks don't tell you what happens when the wolf doesn't need to knock down the door to get inside.
Word count: 3400ish
Notes: this is pure self indulgent 2008-2010ish fanon Axel, does not fit Kingdom Hearts canon anyore, and I do not care one whit. Violence, blood, dubcon.
This is wrong. Itâs so very, very wrong. Wrong and maybe even dangerous but thatâs why you like it, thatâs why you canât let itâlet himâgo.Â
The stranger with red hair and dark purple markings under his eyes who showed up one day in a puff of darkness, smelling like stale cigarettes and something coppery that clung to his strange black coat like tar.Â
Exciting things don't happen here. At least not to you. The life of a princess is a boring one, no matter what the storybooks say. Storybooks are filled with dragons and villains and swordfights. In storybooks, princesses get kidnapped and rescued; in the books your parents donât know about, the ones you keep inside secret covers, they get ravished, too.Â
Real life is boring as hell.Â
Real life means sitting on a throne kept off to the side while your parents meet with advisors, and you pretend to be interested in whatâs being said because thatâs what they expect of you. Even if your fatherâs highest advisor is constantly talking about boring things, like making war or sending spies out to other kingdoms.Â
Real life means being told that you might marry such-and-such a prince of great renown and leave home never to return (what your fatherâs advisor prefers) or (what your father prefers) you might marry such-and-such a prince with lesser standing who comes to live here, and youâll never leave home because why would a queen need to leave her kingdom?
Real life means rules and etiquette and maids tut-tutting when you ask to explore the gardens at night, because even though you have already come of age and ought to be treated like anyone else, everyone still treats you like a child to be minded and controlled.
Itâs maddening.
Itâs ridiculous.
âItâs bullshit, is what it is,â the stranger (but not so much anymore; his name is Axel) says, sprawled out on your pretty pink chaise in his black coat. He sticks out like a sore thumb, and you like him for it.Â
Heâs currently got one of your priceless antique porcelain figures in his hand, something you cared nothing for but that had been passed down from generation to generation in your family. A dowdy thing, a figurine of an ancient princess in repose. Did she find her days as awfully boring as you did?
Well. She didnât have a handsome stranger to keep her company. (Or maybe she did. You hope she did.)
He looks up at you. Grins. The tattoos under his eyes wrinkle with the motion. âSorry, princess. Didnât mean to swear and offend your sensibilities.â
A hot flush works its way from your chest to your face. Itâs not the first time something heâs said has made you feel this way. He doesnât even need to say anything to make you feel all giddy and ridiculous. Heâs just soâso different from anyone youâve ever met.
âYou didnât,â you say, fighting a stammer. âI mean, itâs not like people usually swear around here.â Thoughts of the greater city walls outside the palace come to mind, a place teeming with more life and people than youâve ever experienced in the close off palace walls. âNot in the palace, anyway.â
Axel ceases to fiddle with the figurine. Thereâs a brief moment where you think he might drop it. On purpose, because he can. Or by accident, because he doesnât seem the type to normally hold such delicate figurines.
âEasy solution. Then letâs get out of the palace.â
Oh.Â
Oh no.Â
Itâs the first time heâs suggested such a thing. A brazen suggestion. Completely against the rules. And you tell him so, voice all muddled and low.
âIâm not allowed. You know that. Itâs against the rules.â
Axel raises an eyebrow, a grin threatening to twist his mouth again. âSo is having a strange man in your room in the evening, and yetâŚâ He tosses the figurine back and forth between each hand, and just when you feel a pang of anxiety that it might actually smash to the ground (but why should you care?) he sets it firmly back on your gilded side table.
When his gaze returns to you, itâs sharp and green, and you feel a particular squirming sensation wiggle its way down your body.Â
âSo? Wanna break some rules, princess?â
Itâs impossible to say no.
So you donât.
â
âAre you sure no one will recognize me?â
Axel looks back at you, a brief, twitching smirk. Heâd vanished from your room in a cloud of choking darkness and returned with a dull brown dress and an even duller brown cap. There was a frayed ribbon on the cap, which might have been pretty, once.
Being pretty wasnât the point, though. It was looking like someone else, anyone else, other than yourself. Axel donned a similar outfit; a dark tunic and trousers.Â
âYou look like nobody,â he says, easy, sidestepping your concern like nothing. âThatâs the point. Whoâs going to pay attention to you when youâre wearing something like that? Being nobody means you can do whatever you want, and people donât notice shit.âÂ
His grip on your hand is a little too tight when he pulls you out of the quiet path and directly into the bustling city marketplace.Â
And oh, lords, it is different here. The palace is⌠quiet, usually. Or when itâs not quiet, thereâs an organization and expectation to the noise. The swell of ballroom music, the standard raised voice arguments of advisors, the steady sweep-sweep-sweep of an army of maids sent to clean the floors.
But here? Thereâs nothing organized at all. Itâs dizzying, really, an assault to every single one of your senses as an entirely different world envelopes you in a beautiful mess. Countless voices intermingled with one another, punctuated by cries to sell wares or shouts for what must be unruly children bursting down the street; smells, good and bad, foods and wastes and a headiness that reminds you of motherâs perfume in the afternoon.Â
âA bit different than daddyâs palace, huh?â
âItâsâŚâ You struggle for words.Â
The teasing tone in Axelâs voice is always present but here, in this hustle and bustle, it seems to blend right in. In your rooms it sticks out like a sore thumb. Just like Axel himself. But here, who would take notice of a man with a grin and a sarcastic voice? Here, the world is bigger. Different people and ideas and places and things and everything else besides.
Yes, itâs different. Itâs different and itâs strange and itâs downrightâ
âAmazing.âÂ
Axelâs chuckle is lost to the din of the city as you tug him forward, eager to see what the world outside the palace has to offer.
â
The world outside the palace has, it turns out, plenty to give. People who donât treat you like a porcelain doll, for one. Someone even bumped into you, and they didnât even apologize; at your shocked face, Axel had laughed. After a moment, so had you.
But there was so much more to it than that. This whole world had been outside for your entire life, yet youâd known nothing of it. Good or bad.Â
Nothing of the people laughing and jostling each other, people hawking wares, running to and fro with errands you couldnât even comprehend. Nothing of children dancing in the streets and running around with dolls, nothing of people happily cooking up treats for others to buy, nothing of the endless tapestry of life waiting just outside the palace walls.
And, well.Â
Nothing of the people in ragged clothes (maids sometimes had rough patches or tatters, but a bit taken out of their wages, and those were fixed right up) or children with thin limbs, standing on the corner begging for bread. Couldnât something be done for them? Your fatherâs advisors never so much as mentioned hardship. You knew commoners didnât live in grand luxury, but they didnât deserve to suffer, either.Â
Maybe during the next council meeting, you ought to say something. Ugh, but then⌠how could you admit knowing about this, if youâre not supposed to leave? Things were getting too complicated and maybe this was all one big terribleâ
âSomething on your mind, princess?â
Ah. Right. Youâre standing in a narrow alleyway, the lingering taste of fried sugar dough from a nearby stand in your mouth, thinking about all the ways to right the wrongs in the world while your secret companion stares at you from just across the way.
Axel, despite his common disguise, still makes your heart race every time you look at him. And right now, heâs closer than ever, with just a step or two between you, in the privacy of this darkened space.
âI, um,â you say, quite elegantly, licking the bits of sugar from your lips. âWas just thinking about how we donât really hear about certain things in the palace. Iâm not even sure my parents know that thereâs people who⌠need help. I was thinking maybe, at the next meeting, I might bring it up somehowâŚâÂ
Axel looks at you like youâve got two heads for a moment, and then he snorts, that trademark grin quirking at one end.
âAw. Thatâs cute. Youâve got a real kind heart, you know that?âÂ
It should feel like a compliment but somehow it does not. You shake off that feeling just as he sighs, stretching his arms above his head.Â
âBut donât think too hard about that stuff. Not right now. Weâre supposed to be having fun, arenât we?âÂ
A low feeling in your stomach. How silly, that youâre worried about disappointing him. This mysterious stranger from who-knows-where (all he will say, when you ask, is that heâs from âNowhereâ; he finds it funny, you donât know why) shouldnât have such a hold on you. Yet heâs so different from anyone youâve ever met. He doesnât care about courtesies or your rank, doesnât care about rules and standards.
âArenât we?â He repeats, and thatâs when you realize heâs standing in front of you now, having taken that step to bridge the gap between you. Heâs warm, or maybe itâs just the warmth of the summer day, or maybe itâs your own skin, flushed from the exertion of the day and the closeness and the near-contact.
âAxel?â
He doesnât answer. Or rather, he does. Just not with words.Â
His answer is a kiss. You think itâs a kiss. It must be a kiss. Your first kiss, but itâs not the pretty things from your romance novels, is it? This kiss tastes like smoke and sugar dough, and heâs not sweeping you off your feet, youâre up against a wall in some lonely alleyway.
It is a kiss all the same.
His lips meet your own, although âmeetâ is far too nice a word. His lips practically crash into yours, all force and hardness, a near-clanking of your teeth. The gasp of surprise opens your mouth and suddenly thereâs something warm and wet in itâyou realize with a jump that itâs his tongueâthat feels both repulsive and inviting at once.
That low feeling in your stomach turns tight and as you gasp through the kiss, through the strange invasive feeling of his tongue, you realize that the tightness is pleasure.Â
When he pulls back, youâre panting.
âYouâre sweet,â he says, voice low, eyes staring at your mouth.
âYou taste like cigarettes,â you admit. He barks out a laugh and presses his mouth against yours, just as hard, just as wanting.Â
This time, his hands wander down your shoulders, calloused fingertips brushing against skin that had never known the touch of anyone but delicate servants instructed to treat you with the utmost of softness and reverence.Â
Axel did not touch you delicately or softly. His hands began to grope, to pinch, unfamiliar in practice but familiar in the many books youâve read under the cover of night. Was this how it was? Was this how it was supposed to be?Â
Axelâs hands guide you further into the alleyway, where the sun does not quite reach all the way. The tiny streams of light illuminate his face, make the green of his eyes feel more piercing. It feels like the entire world bursting at the seams just a few feet away doesnât exist at all. Itâs just you and Axel in this semi-darkness; his hands on you, his lips on you, his body pressing you up against the wall in a way that makes every part of you feel fuzzy.
His knee slides up the brick, leather scratching, until it rests between your legs. The hem of your simple dress floats around his knee.Â
You know what heâs getting at. Youâve read about it in so many books. Listened to it, snooping in the hallways, ears pressed against the doors of servants who had no qualms letting their sighs and groans loose in the dead of night.
âReady to break some more rules, sweetheart?â His voice is against your ear and each word makes you shiver.
One hand reaches underneath your dress to grope at the bared flesh there, while another deftly unties his belt buckle.
âWe shouldnât be doing this,â you say, helplessly, almost the bleat of a dumb little lamb. You only say it because itâs what you ought to say in this situation. But youâve let him into your room at night and youâve let him lead you here; youâve let him kiss you and touch you and why not seal the deal?Â
Maybe he says this out loud, maybe youâre only thinking it.
His hands are warm but his flesh is warmer, and youâve heard it only hurts for a little while, anyway. So when he keeps you pressed against the wall and you feel the wet heat of him against your thigh, you donât stop him.
â
Part of you thought heâd stop showing up once the sex happened. But he showed up the next night, and the night after that. Giving you sex and telling you stories afterward. Only the stories he told were full of holes and you werenât sure if they were even true.
Who ever heard of a girl with a fish tail, anyway? Or a talking mouse with a sword. Ridiculous. Still, he told them, full of holes and loose threads that you couldnât tie together.Â
There was still that prickling thought, that you ought to speak with your father or the council about helping those outside the palace. You would, you tell yourself. Just⌠not right away. Because theyâd wonder how you knew about such things, and then theyâd discover Axel, and youâd never see him again.
It was okay to be selfish for a little while. Wasnât it?Â
This night, youâre sprawled out in your bed together, warm and warmer. His arms are around you and youâre basking in that beautiful dusky afterglow. Sex was much better in a bed than in an alleyway. Even Axel could admit that, although heâd said, with a tweak of your nose, that he preferred the sounds you made up against a wall. (Was that a good thing? You darenât ask.)
âAxel,â you begin, brain loose and words looser in the afterglow, âWho are youâŚ. really?â
Because you know him, in a way. Heâs the stranger who showed up in your bedroom in a cloud of smoke and a black jacket. Heâs the stranger whoâs kept you company when youâve been terribly lonely. Heâs the stranger who showed you the world and then ravished you in an alleyway. Heâs the stranger, not-quite-a-stranger, in your bed now.
But beyond that⌠itâs like you canât grasp him completely. Like heâs a wisp of a thing. A dream, the kind no one can fully remember once theyâve woken up from it.Â
When you glance at him for the answer, he closes his eyes. Shrugs. Smiles. Lets out a little snort of a wordâ
âNobody.â
â
There are bodies in the marble hallways. Servants and courtiers alike, all slumped over, some of them looking as if they are merely sleeping and othersâoh the others, mangled, like something awful and sharp has been run through them. Blood spreads out underneath them like a terrible rug.
The monsters have claws, but youâre not sure if the monsters are the ones leaving mangled bodies in their wake. In their wake you see hearts. Not real ones, thank the heavens, but little ones. Pink little hearts that float in the air, all reaching up for the same destinationâbut where?--and leaving behind people with nothing in their eyes and no breath and are they dead? Or is this a dream?
Your slippered feet carry you from hall to hall, seeking refuge or safety. Your parents are missing. The advisors have fled. And the guards, well. Their hearts are just as pink and pretty as everyone elseâs.
Which leaves you⌠who?Â
Your heart flutters in your chest. Thereâs only one person in the world who might be able to help you. If heâs there tonight. Maybe he came when there was commotion and fled, maybe heâs waiting in your room to save you, maybe, maybe, maybe. Sure, the princesses in your books didnât have knights in shining armor that wore black coats or kissed princesses in dirty alleyways, but that didnât matter.
He was strong, and he possessed some sort of magic to teleport as he did, and perhaps his stories werenât stories and there was something he could do.Â
So you fly as fast as you can to your room, nearly slipping on marble, nearly slipping on blood. And when you manage to push open the heavy doors (ignore the hearts going through the ceilingâyour maidâs?) something like warm, blissful relief because heâs there.
There, standing in his black coat, some large sharped wheel slung over his soldier. It takes a few secondsâone, two, three, four, fiveâfor you to see the blood dripping from the spikes, landing on your pretty pink carpet in not so pretty droplets.
âAxel?â Your voice is choked with fear and confusion and the thought that well yes, of course this must be a dream. Because why would Axel be standing in your room holding some type of weapon dripping in blood, unless he was part of this strange attack. Unless he was killing people.
Unless he was a bad person and you didnât see it until it was too late.
âBut youâŚâÂ
The rest of the words donât come, because even in the privacy of the bedroom, with anyone who might listen dead or fleeing, you canât bring yourself to say it out loud. He kissed you. He kissed you and had sex with you (it was not, like the books, âmaking loveâ) and you put off saying anything to your parents about helping others because you liked it when he came to you in the night and touched you more and oh, oh, oh, why are you so stupid and selfish.
Axelâs grin makes your stomach flip for an entirely different reason now. Even in the semi-darkness of the night, with your bedroom candles long snuffed out and only the moonlight through the windows to see it.
âGotta admit, I didnât think you would be one of the seven. Whoever wrote that report was stupid.â The words make no sense. Like his stories. Mice and keys and merpeople. âBut I figured Iâd have a bit of fun before it all came crashing down.âÂ
His gaze turns towards the windows, where even now you can see hearts floating upwards, towards some distant destination. From the palace and from the city, too. The monsters must be everywhere. Inky black and claws waiting.Â
âHope you had some fun,â he says, teasing, not entirely mean. You donât have time to think about it before heâs in front of you, quick as anything, and thereâs a hard, steady pressure in your abdomenâhe stabbed you, he stabbed you with that terrible wheel.Â
Your own blood is what drips down to your pretty pink carpet now.Â
Something from behind you slithers around and you feel a terrible twisting in your chest, only for a moment but what a terrible moment it is, before the world goes black.
Youâre not there to see your heart float through your open windows, joining the rest. Pink with a hint of darkness, like most of them. Unremarkable and pointless in the grand scheme of things.
But, Axel thinks, it doesnât really matter. Each little heart was building towards the Superiorâs greater goal of Ultimate Darkness or whatever bullshit he was currently spewing. The speeches grew longer by the day, which meant they grew more boring, too.Â
Before he goes, he grabs the porcelain princess from your trinket shelf. It would make a fun little souvenir.Â
current personal WIP is this one based on a dream, with Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? vibes and it's making my stomach feel sick to write it, and I kinda love that
another snippet:
âYou okay back there?â He asks, and you can see the lift of his eyebrows as he looks towards the rearview mirror. You probably look like youâre going to puke.
âYeah,â you force out, voice cracking. âJust uh, could I have my phone? I should tell my friend that I was texting before you came that Iâm getting a ride to a shop. Sheâll be worried.âÂ
The dark, paranoid part of you whispers: And thatâs a good thing to say, because now he knows that you were texting someone. That someone will notice, if you go quiet. If you go missing, if heâ
âSure thing!â His voice is chipper and reasonable, and you feel really stupid for letting those paranoid thoughts gain any sort of traction. You really are a bitch sometimes. Here he was, doing you a favor, and youâre concocting fantasies of him being a serial killer in your head. Too many true crime podcasts, not enough living in the real world.
Relief sinks your stomach when he hands you your purse, but the thought of bringing up your texts now makes you feel shitty. Like heâd know why you were doing it, heâd hear your thoughts accusing him of being some Crazy Psycho Killer (â˘) when all heâs doing is giving you a ride to a shop.
Need someone up above to take all your suffering and give it to our government officials
at least I'm safe! and thankfully can stay inside all day. I feel really awful for the people who have lost land and homes from these fires. Or people here who have to work outside in the smoke. I gave some N95 masks to the garbage men yesterday when I saw them pull up, they said that they weren't allowed to call off work. Crazy stuff.
Related but, there was a video that popped up on one of my social media feeds of some animals being carried away by flood waters in Texas, and it said something about the suffering that everyone must face so that 10 people can make billions and yeah... that's how I feel about the state of the world.

leaving my apartment to go to the laundry room and immediately heading back inside because the wildfire smoke is in the communal areas of the apartment building

"Forever?"
Luca shimmers. Luca shifts. Only for a moment, in that moment, just a moment, that's all, but still--that moment is enough.
One, he is Luca, button down shirt, jean overalls, a summer farm boy with summer hay between his teeth. Two, he is--he is Luca?--he is, and he's got some strange box in his hands, slim and garish with sunlight beaming hard from the center of it, and he's barely wearing any clothes and he's wearing spectacles made of steel that blink red like a lantern.
Three, he is Luca, maybe he is Luca after all, and he's got curled powdered hair like one of your grandmother's old miniatures and a suit made of silk and the hunger of the poor dangling between his opulent rings. Four and five and six and seven and eight and--
It's all a moment, nothing more, but you see it within the blink of your eyelashes. He is Luca and he is and isn't and was and wasn't. Like summer that comes and goes but is here throughout the year, underneath one's feet, buried underneath the snow and waiting to snake out from the cool spring grass.
"Give me a hundred years or so," he says, when he's back to himself, a piece of hay wiggling around with every word. "And I can be here a lot longer."

Today, his skin is glistening, partly from sweat, partly from the water that clings to him, although you'd both left the water half an hour ago. The faint smell of saltwater drifts on the breeze.
He stretches his arms back, puts one around you. Bold and bolder every day, but you don't mind. There's no one around to see you let a man you're not married to touch you, in your swim costume, no less. (Your elbows are even visible!)
"I do," he admits, a bit of sheepishness in there. "Sometimes. If I forget to put something on. Lots of ways to keep the sun at bay, you know, where I'm from..." A frown, slight, minute. "Where I've been, rather, or some of them... hard to keep track, y'know..."
He scratches his nose, and with it, suddenly, a smear of red paste appears across the bridge, like strange theater paint.
"What is--" You reach out to touch it, fascinated, disturbed.
He looks at his fingers, ponders, then remembers with a grimace. "Ah, yes. This one is... red vet pet." His lips twist and the words that come out don't quite make sense, each one making your stomach feel lower and lower. "For the navy. Or the marines? Land army? I can't keep them straight. They look the same when they're dead and 1944 is not so far from that last one, but at least 1944 doesn't get a sunburn."
He blinks at you now, like he's just remembered you're here, sitting here in your pretty swim costume. A hand reaches out, strokes your skin; but the paste is gone and there's nothing but his thumb, scratching at the salt the sea gifted you. "I think we're in... so that's..." He taps his finger against your cheek 4 times. "40 years?"
The look he gives you sends a chill through your spine, despite the heat of the summer day. It's an odd look, somehow both far away and too close at once. "Unless we don't stay here. We can slip through, and you'll never have to get to 1944. You see?"
You don't see. One moment you're asking him why he seems immune to the heat of the sun, and the next he's making no sense. Talking about armies and a year that's 4 decades off.
"Luca, you're worrying me."
A smile. It doesn't comfort, even as his hand cups your cheek.

Nicest Thing by Kate Nash is an underrated yandere potential song. Been listening to it on repeat while I plot out the next chapter of Damn Your Eyes. I feel like it suits Ren well... younger Ren in particular but part of him, there, when he's older.
All I know is that you're so nice
You're the nicest thing I've seen
I wish that we could give it a go
See if we could be something
I wish I was your favorite girl
I wish you thought I was the reason you are in the world
I wish my smile was your favorite kind of smile
I wish the way that I dressed was your favorite kind of style
I wish you couldn't figure me out
But you'd always wanna know what I was about
I wish you'd hold my hand
When I was upset
I wish you'd never forget
The look on my face when we first met
I wish you had a favorite beauty spot
That you loved secretly
'Cause it was on a hidden bit
That nobody else could see
Basically, I wish that you loved me
I wish that you needed me
I wish that you knew when I said two sugars
Actually I meant three
I wish that without me your heart would break
Yeah, I wish that without me you'd be spending the rest of your nights awake
I wish that without me you couldn't eat
Yeah, I wish I was the last thing on your mind before you went to sleep
Look, all I know is that
You're the nicest thing I've ever seen
And I wish we could see if we could be something
Yeah, I wish we could see if we could be something
