I really hate the fact that African parents get at their children for only speaking English and not their native tongue when they have taken absolutely so action to teach them anything.
Tbh it goes for many things, Africans parents be expecting the world from you, not offer any support then complain when you fall short. They got you thinking you gotta be perfect. That’s some harmful ish.
My life has changed so much since I graduated from college 4 years ago that most of the time I forget that I graduated with honors in biomedical engineering and that I got a 2nd degree in history too. I was SUCH a traditional Nigerian college student 😂😂😂😂.
like when I was accepted to Duke I remember telling my dad that I wanted to study “biochemistry” and he straight up HISSED at me and said, “so do you want to be a teacha? you must do something PRACTICAL like engineering or pharmacy” and i was like 😓 ok. LOL. and emailed the engineering school at Duke immediately asking to transfer in.
oh what a (naija) lyfe
my parents are convinced that Trump was chosen by God to fix America (according to their prophets) and I mean I guess we’ll see
Lmaoo

C: African parents can be the most emotionally neglectful people in the world. Particularly my mom. Understand I love my mom, however, she consistently guilt trips me into everything. She complains that I never talk to her, but when I do she just tells me to pray, or dismisses my feelings completely. When I cry in front of her she calls me weak or just taunts me. I’m 18 and living on campus but this still continues. I don’t know what to do, I don’t want this to be our relationship forever.
😒
Elder African family members: Do you know what that means to me in our culture where we are from?
Me who has lived in America for the past 21 years: No.
Lol it’s so cute how people actually have cute bonding conversations with their parents. My conversations with my parents include: passing the remote, invisible dishes in the sink, school and “when are you getting married”….oh, and forwarded messages on WhatsApp
Her dad took her little brother to the barbershop. Listen to the pain in his voice and what his father ended up saying.
I love African parents. I swear 😭😂😭😂😭
mehnnnn....my parents made me feel so bad for having dreams as a kid
if it wasn’t aspirations for a ‘respectable’ career, my parents would just make fun of me.
this is why i’m always scared as shit to share my plans with anyone and i always think any idea i have is stupid from the jump.

African parents
They Disrespect you on daily basis hurt your feelings and when you try to defend yourself and talk to them you because you don’t deserve this kind of treatment you become disrespectful and uneducated, because to them you’re supposed to put with the abuse because that’s how they were educated they don’t even realize how wrong it is to not let you express yourself or you’re just talking back. Just because they think because their adults and your parents they always have the right to belittle you and you just need to accept their abusive behavior, because it’s an abuse of power to them an educated child always have to put up to what their parents do to educate them. And when you tell that it’s wrong they say that it’s how you show respect by shutting up and accept the abuse because that’s they do there. And I’m really starting to get tired of it..
Every African Mom when they see a girl wearing leggings lmao
This is a question for children of African immigrants. How did y’all fix or confront your parents about thier antiblackness? I understand where’s she’s coming from xenophobia; she’s experienced and heard about. At this point, it’s hateful and unnecessary.
I swear, the way Africans treat their women and daughters as disposable is annoying. The men will mistreat the women then the women in turn mistreat their daughters and then the cycle continues. I’m constantly called upon the most in my household to do things around the house. My parents wake only me up early in the morning when they leave for work to give me the list of things they want done before they come back. If something goes wrong it’s my responsibility as the eldest to take control. Etc…

Mom: *finds case of condoms in my belongings* eyy what is this?
Me:
Ummm, the school gave it to everyone
Mom: Oh so they are teaching you bad things???
Me: No, it’s a part of sex education and prevent of Stds and HIV
Mom: hmmmm, okay *hands them back*
Me: *wait till she finds out I had a whole boyfriend, boy oh boy*
I feel like I’ve been through so many traumatic experiences that I haven’t been able to process and accept these experiences in a healthy way and it’s led to me going through an incredibly long identity crisis and I’m so desperate to find a place I belong that I’m deluding myself with just bullshit after bullshit.
I’m so aware of who I am not and its difficult for me to communicate how I’m feeling and what I’m thinking to others because I was raised in an environment with parents and a brother that spoke my home country’s language (bemba) with each other but only spoke to me in English so they did not express their emotions to me with words or actions I could understand.
