There are two known variants of Poecilotheria Subfusca: the lowland (located 1526-1640’ above sea level, and a light brown/creme colored pattern), and the highland (located 6168’ above sea level, and a darker brown color.) Attempts have been made to cross-breed the two together, but all egg sacs produced have been duds with the exception of a sole spiderling that survived to 2nd instar. As the sling matured, it displayed gynandromorphism, or the presence of both male an female features. In the picture, you can see this condition as the darker half (highland) is male and the lighter half (lowland) is female. It is a wonder that this animal survived to maturity. This incredibly rare specimen is currently being cared for at the headquarters of Tarantula Canada.
