I was planning to finally add this guy to my Art Fight profile, and then the team themes they revealed this year are Seafoam vs. Stardust... and I guess that was just destiny for my space shark! XD
Anyway, he got a bit of a facelift and a little name change since the first finished drawing of him — I originally drew him for a very over-the-top TSL pbp game that didn't last, but I liked the design so I decided to keep Mel and turn him into a stand-alone OC.
I would like to do art fight again this year, so I'm looking at turning some more of my old TTRPG characters into potential target OCs. With luck I'll wind up with some sketches to post here, too.
I've been so burnt out for several years now (hell how as it been that long? I used to feel like I needed to draw to breathe), but I want to get back to drawing for fun.
Going to try and keep things simple.
I made a very quick and dirty Art Fight ref sheet for Valen. Considering all of the game-related details I could babble about it's probably a good thing that this is a simplified version. To reiterate and expand on the imagetext:
Valen Lefevre
Gender: nonbinary transmasculine (he/they) Ancestry: Khoravar (half-elf) Appearance: dark brown hair and eyes, light brown skin. His hair is long past his shoulders and is usually pulled back in a thick braid, with choppy bangs that fall around his eyes. As a Khoravar, he has lightly pointed ears but otherwise appears human.
The backs of his hands and forearms are covered in old, pale burn scars from a splash of molten slag. The exact shape of the scars is not important to the design. When in doubt, imagine someone dropping a rock into a mug of thick paint he was holding.
He has a small notch scar in his left right ear.
Valen writes with charcoal for some of his magical rituals. His magic has a smoky, fiery aesthetic like a hearth fire, or a blacksmithing forge.
Valen wears lightweight clothing reminiscent of regency era men's fashion, including a cravat, vest and long coat when he's dressing up.
So earlier this year I decided to try my hand at animating in Clip Studio using Valen Lefevre, my Forge Cleric / Star Druid PC. That little spell in his scarred hand is how I visualize his version of Druidcraft. As you can see, the weather in Sharn is going to be mostly clear for the next day.
I've been posting some other art of him over on a personal art blog, because sometimes I feel like people get disappointed when everything I most isn't creatures. If you want to check that out, they're over at @aetivel.
I would like to make more kind of ambient loops like this in the future, I think.

Expressive Valen sketches! Maybe someday I'll post other characters on this blog...
One thing that's been very fun for me with Valen is that, because I wanted to draw him more expressively, that's enabled me to really dig into a cartooning style in a way that I haven't in years.
I'd been so burdened with the notion of only making art that I felt people wanted from me (highly detailed, painterly, nature-focused illustrations), that I hadn't taken time to branch out and try anything that was really different for me in probably years.
It's been nice to have a character make me really feel something about making art, the way that I did before art college.
I realize I'm still struggling with burnout, but this feels a bit like healing.
Valen and his fey horse, Socks. He's started dressing a lot more casually, partly because the subtropical climate of Sharn is making cravats less practical and partly because his fancier clothes were an attempt to make a good impression on his new employers.

Here's a little drawing of my Khoravar forge cleric, Valen Lefevre.
Sure they dress well a lot of the time, but they're also a smith from a professional family in Askelios. They've got plenty of work clothes, too. Besides, there's not as much reason to worry about soot on the floor when the Wayfinders have cleansing stones.

An art meme template! The short hair looks better than I feared, and the historical one made me literally cackle multiple times.
The more I study and try to develop my own cartooning style, the more I'm convinced that the "trick" is around 50% discovering my natural mark-making tendencies, 75% leaning into everything I think looks cool, and 9000% learning not to give a fuck that my work is always going to look weird to me.
This character has no name... yet. They seem like a good kid, though!
I did a lot of sketching this morning and decided to try using my flats-before-lines method with something a little more complicated. I really like the way this came out!

Over the past year I've switched from drawing and painting everything traditionally to working digitally in Clip Studio. This has partly been due to a persistent RSI, but I was also dealing with some pretty intense burnout last summer. Something needed to change.
There's a few different styles at work in this page — I also haven't done a lot of human character design before (though I do have experience with figure drawing I feel that's a Whole Other Thing from this), so I had to give myself a lot of time and space to dig in and feel out how I wanted to draw for fun again. How much did I want to lean into style? How much detail did I want to incorporate? I'm still feeling it all out, but having RPGs as kind of a safe space where I'm not obligated to make everything marketable is incredibly refreshing.
This sketchbook page was where I really started to feel like I was getting Valen's design "right." The cartoony top how has probably influenced everything I've drawn of them since this the most.

The current D&D game I'm in is kind of on hiatus (it's PbP and someone has had to beg off posting for a few weeks, as can happen). So I've been drawing my character in preparation to maybe do some very short comics about their past, as an outlet for all of that pent-up RPG energy. Valen is a forge cleric mechanically, but he/they learned magical smithing from spending time in Thelanis at The Assembly after a fey deal went a little sideways.
