“Those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.” — Romans 8:5 NIV
One of the greatest battles you’ll ever fight isn’t the battle around you, it’s the battle within you. Long before your hands move, your feet walk, or your mouth speaks, your mind has already chosen a direction. Paul draws a clear distinction in Romans 8:5. He doesn’t merely describe two different behaviors, he describes two different mindsets. The flesh and the Spirit are both competing for your attention, your affection, and your focus. Whatever consistently occupies your mind will eventually shape your life.
The flesh is always pulling us toward what is temporary, self-centered, and disconnected from God’s purpose. The Spirit is always drawing us toward what is eternal, holy, and life-giving. That is why Proverbs 4v23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” What fills your thoughts will eventually influence your choices. What influences your choices will ultimately determine your direction.
Notice that Paul says those who live according to the Spirit have their minds set on the things of the Spirit. A set mind is an intentional mind. It’s a mind that has made up its mind. It refuses to be controlled by every temptation, fear, offense, or distraction. It’s fixed on God’s promises, anchored in His Word, and guided by His presence. Isaiah declared, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You” (Isaiah 26:3). Peace isn’t merely the absence of trouble, it’s the fruit of a mind that has learned where to rest.
Today, ask yourself a simple but searching question. What has my mind been feeding on lately? Fear or faith? Worry or worship? Anxiety or expectation? Bitterness or gratitude? The answer may reveal more about your spiritual condition than you realize. The Spirit of God isn’t only interested in changing your circumstances, He’s committed to transforming your mind. As your mind is renewed, your desires begin to change. As your desires change, your life begins to change. As your life changes, the glory of God becomes visible through you.
Set your mind on the things of the Spirit today. Fix your thoughts on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable (Philippians 4:8). Refuse to let the flesh have the final word. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, and He is more than able to lead your mind, guard your heart, and direct your steps into the purpose God has prepared for your life.
