i mean seriously. other than the fact that he canonically gets zero play, he’s the pillar of hero society for the majority of his life. from the moment he steps into the world of heroism, he’s under incomprehensible pressure from two separate pro heroes (torino and nana) to perform at an extremely high level at yuuei academy, right after getting his quirk. unlike midoriya, though, he’s not in an environment of peacetime. all for one is at his peak, and it remains that way until after nana dies.
you meet in secondary school, and he’s so committed to the idea of saving people that while he tries his hardest to make time for you, you’ll always end up calling him while he’s beating some villains with a metal pole. he’s scared of getting too close to you because of what happened to his family back when he was young, which of course, you don’t know about, because he’d never let something like that show, even if you’re close with him.
you meet at yuuei, and he’s the golden boy of his year, charming and well-mannered and all sorts of awkward, with a crooked grin and unexpectedly firm handshake. and he’s never available after school, and he can’t tell you anything about himself, and you confront him on it and he says he will change. he does not know yet that he can’t, not with what he’s been burdened with. fundamentally, toshinori yagi can’t save everyone, but he just doesn’t realize that yet…
maybe you meet him in america, when he’s an incredibly-powerful and shining figure from the faraway land of japan, cruising about in dave’s tricked-out sports car and stopping villains on his morning commute to lecture. but he’s no time for you; there’s always something else on his mind. you manage to get past his shell and learn his secrets, and you realize you’re on a clock — that eventually, he’ll return to japan, and he simply cant have you following him back there. there’s someone waiting for him across the ocean who will look at you and see someone else to take from him.
you meet him once he returns and starts dismantling all for one’s criminal empire. you’re a pro hero with a powerful quirk, and you can hold your own at his side during his patrols. you’re an old friend of nighteye’s, maybe, with the same stubbornness as he, and you worm your way into his save-them-all psyche and past his indomitable shields. you get a date once a month, maybe, often interrupted by some hero duty on one of your ends (usually his). by now he’s coming to realize that with every new attack from all for one, he’s got less and less time for you. and no matter how much he loves you, he wouldn’t pick all of japan — the world, even — over you. the plight of a hero is best seen in the heart of toshinori yagi.
let’s say that despite this, you understand being second to the world. you can accept that, and you stick by his side. it’s not easy, but you get by. at least until all for one learns about you, the person closest to all might’s heart. one way or another, he will find his way to you. through your loved ones, old coworkers, anyone you’ve saved… or someone you failed to. he’s relentless in his pursuit of any crack in all might’s armor, and in you, he sees a chasm. and it ends for you this way: quirkless, dead, nomu-fied, or so mentally destroyed by his actions that you leave toshinori for the safety of everyone else. he will ensure, in some way, that you guys can’t stay together. he’ll find the worst way to do it, and he’ll succeed.
anyways… in the brief moments between disaster that you do get, he’s soft. sweet. kind and apologetic. hardly the boisterous man you see on television, smile softened and hands sore from being curled into fists half the time. i like to think he’s an acts of service type, alongside physical touch. constancy is the one thing he desires to give you in his tumultuous world of change, and yet he can’t give it. and you can’t give it to him, as much as you’d like. it’s doomed to fail, but you’re both chasing the chance.
this foolishness is why your love began. it’s also why it ends.
