AEMM Senator

Hey, Sorry about the delay! I've been sort of 'offline' this summer. You don't always have to be up-to-date in the Arts but just be well versed. I don't always know everything that's going on, but I like to keep tabs on things here and there. And believe me a lot of things still fly over my head. And I'm fine with it.

As we near the semester’s end I’d like to look back on a great year for SGA, Columbia, and for AEMM. But I know, you’re probably asking “where have I been?”

I have been extremely busy with my studies, looking for employment, and looking for internships.

And I am proud to say that I’m in the homestretch. I now have a part-time job, and am looking forward to starting a summer internship in Chicago. We’re also in the midst of the weeks of final exams at Columbia which a very strenuous time for many students.

But, there is always a bright light at the end of the tunnel. At Columbia that light is known as Manifest: Urban Arts Festival is taking place on May 4th 2012.  Manifest is a unique, free, and endearing event showcasing the body of work of the graduating classes of 2012, encompassing all of Columbia's 22 buildings in the south loop area. From Nationally known headlining acts performing to the fashion department's runway show "Launch" to live radio broadcasts and photography exhibitions, Manifest is filled with activity and work of more than 2,000 seniors. It’s one of Columbia’s hallmark events and attracts thousands of students, families, neighbors, and Chicagoans to the South Loop.

Over the past few months I’ve been active in campus life by hosting numerous study halls in the AEMM Offices, the semesterly department forum, and an entrepreneur conference. Columbia offers great programming and opportunities for students to be engaged on campus, I’m proud to have contributed to the great events at the school.

On Thursday March 1st  Columbia’s Critical Encounters kicks off its residency with Guerilla Girls with a hosted reception from 5-7 at 1104 S. Wabash. The reputable feminist and activist collective will be answering questions, directing conversation, and presenting the connection between art and activism.

On Tuesday March 13th I will be hosting the spring semester AEMM forum.

 Forum is an event where students assemble with their senator to voice opinions on the department, academic interests, and Columbia as a whole in an open forum setting. The information that is discussed during these meetings are highly valuable and I take note of everything and hand it over to other elected student officials in direction of creating change on campus.

On Wednesday March 14th   I will be hosting another AEMM Studyhall!

For those who missed out on last Friday's Blood Ball, here's a glimpse into what was there and/or who was there. Mary Blood Ball, is Columbia's version of a winter formal. You can expect people decked out in traditional formalwear and partygoers in full drag. Hosted by two men dressed up in full drag as Mary Blood and Ida Riley, the founders of Columbia College Chicago the ball offers free high style food, great dancing, talented student DJs, and a kickass photobooth. It's the party of the year at Columbia.

It's that time of year! Break out those resumes, dust off those cover letters, and polish up that image (includes online images) to prepare for a great summer internship! Why start now? The summer is the season where a majority of students apply for internships and also companies offer internships, so as one may imagine it's pretty hectic with so many people applying for some of the same internship opportunities that maybe only available in the summer. For resume tips and polishing Columbia has a great resource called The Portfolio Center, I personally have used them for resources pertaining to job location, resumes, and portfolios.
