Ā āMe, too!ā Naturally⦠an easy spot for a junior officer to be in. Even if she needed intel, she couldnāt draw too much attention.Ā āDrats⦠Iām not great at being subtle.ā ⦠Drats? Really, Ania? And even sayingĀ she wasnāt great at being subtleā¦Ā āIāll just keep my head down, then. And follow your lead! Howās that sound?āĀ
Drats? What an odd word. It must be a northern expression.Ā āThat sounds agreeable. Iāll try not to lead you too far astray.ā Curiously, she asked,Ā āDid you always plan to join the fleet?ā The way she spoke, carried herself, didnāt seem to suit the way Dhanna had always been raised, the way many others in this barrack had likely been raised. Their military goal always in mind.
SāANRA ( @telepathicstarsĀ· )
Ā Ā Aniaās smile canāt help but grow, nearly simper at Dhanna. Oh, she likesĀ her. Delightfully intriguing? Gods⦠Funny, and beautiful, and the friendliest face on Romulus thus far.Ā āThen I must be in luck.ā Uh⦠is she flirting?Ā āPersonally, I donāt think allĀ prying is bad.ā Itās just then that another Romulan clambers down the hall, and Ania falls respectfully silent, inclines her head at them. They return it, silently, turn a corridor, and theyāre alone again.Ā āWhat shifts are you on?āĀ
āKre. Second shift.ā Sheād hoped for first shift, but it was rare for a junior officer to receive such an assignment. But she would of course give it everything she had, regardless.Ā āOf course prying isnāt bad. I only suggest that our superiors may not take kindly to junior officers investigating too much. Particularly if we are not subtle.ā

Ā Ā āHa ā of course.ā It has the decency to come out bashful ā she smiles, full-faced, realizing only belatedly that sheās not sure if sheāll blush green or red. Dammit. āThank you.ā After all, a word of warning like that was a big thing, to Romulans, right?Ā
Ā Ā She pauses, shifting through the thought of military-oriented upbringingĀ and ā as she often isĀ ā finds herself curious.Ā āWhat about you? Not prying, though, just⦠getting to know each other. How do you feel about that?ā
Just getting to know each other.Ā āIs that not a form of prying?ā she replied, half-teasing. Yes, something was odd about this other woman. But something delightfully intriguing.Ā āBut I think I could be agreeable to it.ā
COMMANDER DATA ( @strings-have-been-cutā )
It was unsurprising that records were kept on notable Starfleet officers. The Romulans were a very organized, very secretive people who valued information. Data did not consider himself a better officer than his colleagues, but he was aware that he was notable, especially the societies that were yet unfamiliar with synthetic lifeforms.Ā āI believe that would be wise.ā A statement that was not meant to be a threat, but Data interpreted the words as sounding vaguely threatening nevertheless.Ā
āThere must be more thanĀ ādutyā andĀ āsacrificeā,ā he questioned.Ā āAlthough I have never heard a Romulan discuss anything that was not along those lines. Does your work consume your life?ā He knew this was not the case for humans. Humans had desires and needs based in material possessions, experiences, and relationships. This could be viewed as a weakness by other races.
It actually took Dhanna a moment to work through the question. How could work consume her life when it was such an integral part already?Ā āOh, I see. In human cultures, your duty is only a small part of your entire life, correct? No such distinction exists for us. I am an Imperial Officer. Anything else I may choose to do or be is secondary. How else can we perform to the best of our ability?ā
LISTER ( @ncthingstarsā )
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āyou can say that again.ā but she makes a good point, believe it or not, and though lister doesnāt care much for whatās going on around him, he thinks pointing that out to dhanna would probably be a mistake. āokay,ā he says. āif weāre learning from each other, tell me something about yourself that no one else knows.ā he grins, leaning his elbow on the table and looking at her expectantly. āwell?ā
Heās so sure of himself that Dhanna actually chuckles.Ā āI could tell you about my interests. My childhood. Perhaps my family. But what proof would you have that what I tell you is the truth? Do you have this much faith in someone youāve just met?ā

COMMANDER DATA ( @strings-have-been-cutā )
This was not the first time Data had been asked this question. In fact, he had been asked seven different variations of this very same inquiry. He supposed it was because people misconstrued lack of emotion for lack of morality.Ā āLogic would dictate that I save whoever is more likely to survive. It is implied that they would be in exactly equal situations, which is near impossible. However, if that were the case, I need to take the entire context of the scenario into consideration.ā
He paused clearly perplexed by the question as he always was. āYou are asking me which of those individuals has more value than the other. It is my duty to protect any and all Starfleet officers to the best of my ability. I value both equally. I suppose I would not be able to make the decision until I was faced with it. If the situation were that dire, I would not take time to deliberate. It would simply be a reaction.āĀ
Satisfied with the answer, he then offered it to Dhanna.Ā āIf I understand your customs correctly, I believe you would choose to save the higher ranking Romulan official.āĀ
āOf course.ā There was no other answer in Dhannaās mind.Ā āAnd every officer in the Imperial Fleet understands that it is our duty to sacrifice ourselves if called upon to do so.ā But his answer still intrigued her. The thought of a computer being able to act on impulse, react unpredictably to a situation at hand...
āYou are not anything like I expected, Commander,ā she finally admitted.Ā āYour files in our records do not do you justice. Perhaps I will need to have them updated.ā

MOORE ( @empathicstarsā )
Ā Ā A ragged breath in, and out, gentle, the rising and falling of the sea, abating barely, painfully. Tachyons. A wave of pain takes her, scrubs her away until she almost nothing, almost simply a speck among the sand, a piece of nothing in the atmosphere, until she wrestles herself back, tone hoarse but voice steady.Ā āIt was the same with us. We were on the edge of the neutral zone when we began picking up tachyon particles from a nearby planet. The patterns of the particles intrigued me, and the captain sent me and a small away team down to the planet. Iā¦ā Eyelashes flutter ā the pain claws at her head.Ā āForgive me. I do not recall anything further.āĀ
Her new ally seems to be phasing in and out of consciousness -- she must have been hit hard. Maybe they wanted to be sure their captive empath was truly out.Ā āWe must have found something that someone didnāt want us to. A massive cloak must have failed.ā She sighs, considering.Ā āGive me your hands. I may be able to undo your bonds. And we can try to form a plan. Do you sense anything except for me?ā

SIRISE ( @siriseen )
Ā Ā Wow! Wow! This really isĀ a good day! Hereās a stranger, telling her that sheās goodĀ at something, and, hey, for the moment, Siriseās gonna ignore that that good at somethingĀ is scaring the shit out of her. ( She knows sheās good at bad things. But sheāll take the laughter, the lightness in her chest, and pretend that this isĀ and wasĀ a good thing. )Ā
Ā Ā āYou knowāā she begins signing; stops short with a visible scowl, and goes back to typing on her PADD. You know Orion? Thatās weird. Before she can hand it over, sheās being offered the cloth, which she greedily accepts, signing a finger flicking at her temple, sighing all dramaticĀ at the realization that she has to type that, too. But first; she adds to her previous sentence. Do you trade with Orions a lot then?Ā
Ā Ā Ha ha, good idea. I am a doctor after all.
āA very good doctor,ā Dhanna confirms, before adding,Ā āCan Åed p'tuepla Kolari? Though Iām afraid it isnāt my best language. Iāve had no need to speak it for so long.ā In fact, it had been nothing but Rihannsu for the past several years...
āIām not a trader. Iām Qowat Milat.ā Realizing that probably meant nothing to the child, she clarified,Ā āIām a helper. I see people in need of assistance. And I offer it.ā
MOORE ( @empathicstarsā )
She senses something, but through a veil of pain, heavy and slippery and hardly tangible, hardly there, in fact, more notĀ than anything else. Barely solid, barely real, Aella believes she senses a strange focus. A concentration laced with curiosity. Of course, she finds herself brushing it off, disregarding it, for it is not a feeling of which she should be wary, even from what should be anĀ āenemyā. ( And oh, if she were not so pain-ridden, the contemplation of being alone with a Romulan may frightenĀ her⦠)Ā
Ā Ā āStrange readings?ā she echoes, voice bare, ravaged ā anxiety seeping into her soul.Ā āWill you elaborate?āĀ
Dhanna considers for a moment, always wary to reveal too much information, but decides thereās little to risk by telling.Ā āElevated and distorted tachyons,ā she replies.Ā āPlease donāt ask me what exactly that means. I am not a scientist. All I know is there was evidence of cloaking technology on a massive scale.ā
Which would explain how their captors had gone entirely unnoticed.Ā āI think itās your turn to share, Lieutenant.ā

SāANRA ( @telepathicstarsā )
Ā Ā Oh, and thereās her opening, and any of the training Ania mightāve received flies right out of the window.Ā āYes, I am! Itās tremendously difficult, isnāt it?ā A pause ā a realization that she should fill in gaps, lest they be filled in for her.Ā āIāve always been a bit strange, but Iāve been working hard to fit in. Honor my family.ā None of this is really a lie, so itās easy to let her shoulder sag in resignation.Ā āBut⦠itās hard.āĀ
Her neighbor is talkative. But thereās something endearing about her. Not everyone had the same military-oriented upbringing as Dhanna, after all. Being thrown into this with little preparation had to be difficult.
āIām sure youāll do just fine,ā she says, with a surprising amount of warmth in her tone.Ā āI heat the senior officers arenāt as intense as they make themselves out to be. Though Iād keep the prying to a minimum with them.ā
COMMANDER DATA ( @strings-have-been-cutā )
He considered her comment for a few seconds while his eyes fell from her face and focused indeterminately.Ā Ā āI have many weaknesses,ā he told her. He thought it strange she would think he was unwilling to share such information. Many of his weaknesses were clear for her to see.Ā āI do not understand the nuances of human social interaction, and this makes casual participation difficult. Incorrectly understanding the implied emotional status of a situation can result in an inappropriate reaction. This has proven to be both inconvenient and potentially dangerous for myself and those around me.āĀ
This was just one example of his blatant weaknesses, but her follow up question seemed much more pressing.Ā āI do not believe one person can be more important than another,ā he answered automatically.Ā āIt is impossible to determine the worth of a sentient being, although many races value their own species existence over others. As I am one of the only non-organic species in existence, I have a unique perspective in that I do not value one living person over another.ā Even as he said it, however, Data wondered if he did have a preference for certain people. Would it be the truth to say he would really value, say, Geordiās life as much as a strangerās?
Oh. He had just told her. He must not think it much of a risk to reveal that information. Or perhaps he was just a very trusting person.Ā āI wouldnāt think of social interaction as a weakness. But I suppose youāre correct. In a tense situation, a misinterpretation could be quite serious.ā
But the theory he posited to her simply didnāt align with Dhannaās worldview.Ā āSo if you had to choose. If a situation occurred where you only had time to save one person -- a Starfleet ensign, or your Starfleet president. They have equal value to you. Which would you choose to save?ā
