“Hmm… I see…” Thorin smiled as he saw how happy Bilbo looked. He was glad and slightly jealous at how idellic his childhood was compared to Thorin. “Before… Before Smaug, for Durin’s Day, my grandfather would have the tradition of buying toys for all the dwarflings in Erebor. We would have sweets, a feast and at night, we would all gather in Dale to see the fireworks. I doubt they were as grand or magical as Gandalf’s, but they were still beautiful. My sister used to think that the stars came out to dance on Durin’s Day.” He recalled as he looked at Frodo.
“That sounds wonderful. I wish I had been able to see Erebor and Dale before Smaug came.” He could only imagine how glorious the two kingdoms had once been. “We can, of course, continue to celebrate Durin’s Day. It’s important to your people and I want Frodo to be educated about the world around him, not just the Shire. I would often read about far off places and collect maps, as you know. But it was different when I joined your company. I actually saw and experienced things, Thorin. I owe Gandalf for giving me the push out the door and it’s because of him that I met you and made life long friendships. Balin and Bofur and I still write to each other. Balin’s hoping to come out here for some tea soon on a trip to visit the Blue Mountains again.”
“If that is what you wish, Bilbo. I would be honored if we did,” Thorin reached out to Bilbo and touched his face gently. “To live a life so ignorant of the world around you may be a naive point of view, narrow-minded even, I would not wish for that for Frodo. I want him to be the wisest of Hobbits. A friend to all folk in Middle Earth.”
He smiled softly at Thorin’s touch. “I like to think I’ve become more educated about Middle Earth since I went on the quest. If nothing else, I gained a true partner and valuable friendships. Although I am curious. You said all the folk of this world. Does that include the elves?” It was a very light tease. “I think I amused Lord Elrond. I’m sure he’e be taken with Frodo.”
thorin-thrainson:
“Aye… I know I can manage that much, at least,” Thorin nodded as he followed Bilbo into the kitchen. He remembered how much food seemed to magically appear from this place. Having lived a life of poverty for so long, such bounty was more than welcoming. He rolled up his sleeves, went to the basin and washed his hands carefully with soap. He looked down on his finger and found his signet ring, one of the few reminders of his past self he kept with him.
“I do know, however, that… I am much better at carving up orcs than… dicing carrots, so please excuse my lack of culinary finesse.” Such mundane and domestic tasks, no matter how monotonous they were to him, would be a welcome distraction from recalling his guilt.

“That’s fine. As my father told me, the appearance doesn’t matter so long as the food tastes good and you eat with those you care about. Although, I admit that I’m still better at cutting up vegetables and meats in my kitchen than slicing up orcs.” He said. Truth be told, he was glad to have Thorin with him again. Ever since he had come back from his unexpected journey, he had felt lonely and depressed.
After he lead Thorin into the kitchen, he disappeared for a moment to his pantry to retrieve a basket full of washed vegetables. He put the basket down in front of Thorin before retrieving a knife and cutting board for the dwarf to use.
“I always keep my pantry filled. You never know when some kind, loyal, hard working, and hungry dwarves might show up. Of course, none of them need bother knocking.” He said, trying to be light. “Cut these up. I’ll get the water and herb seasonings ready. We’ll have a nice warm stew with some brown bread. And there’s some honey cake for dessert.”
He moved away to pull out a large pot that he filled with water and hung over the roaring fire in the kitchen fire place to begin to boil before he reached to retrieve several jars of different herbs that he sprinkled into the water to season it for the vegetables.

The brothers listened as Bilbo explained, exchanging looks of understanding and sympathy as they knew the pain of losing one’s parents at a young age. They somehow felt even more connected to the tiny hobbit despite not meeting him yet.
“We’ll be gentle with him, we promise” Fili assured their dearest burglar
“I’m glad. He’ll be done with his bath shortly.” Bilbo said. “In the meantime, I have some things to give you. Some gifts from the Shire. It’s not weapons, but I hope you will enjoy them, anyway.”

This sudden attachment Thorin had to the boy surprised even him. Perhaps his soul needed to find someone to father. This innocent child was in need of love and the recently berieved Thorin had ample to offer.
“My…my father? Gandalf?” He looked up with surprise.

Bilbo watched Thorin, somehow knowing that this was what the dwarf was meant to do. Thorin was meant to be a father. Perhaps adopting Frodo would be a good thing for both of them and help to fully heal the hold wounds they carried.
“Yes. I’m not sure what he has to to tell you, but he said it was important. A promise he had made to your father that he plans to keep.” The hobbit explained, speaking calmly. “He should be here in a few days. He’ll come here to us. Tomorrow we can go out to market with Frodo and pick up some extra food for his arrival. What do you say, love?”
“Yes…I think that very fine indeed. Frodo maybe will get to see other hobbits his age and have friends to play with,” Thorin nodded with a smile on his face. “Do you know if there are any others his age in town?”
“Of course. There are plenty of hobbits his age that he can be friends with. I think we also have some distant cousins around his age that he can play with as well.” Bilbo smiled. “I’m sure he and the other children will be excited when Gandalf comes. That wizard always likes to put on a show of fireworks for the children. He used to visit my grandfather, Old Took, quite a bit when I was younger and would put on spectacular mid summer eve fireworks shows.”

Thorin smirked as he looked up from the book he had been reading, when he heard his husband’s voice. He closed his book, but not before remembering the page he was on. “Aye. Do you really think so, ghivashel?” he intoned, as he soon joined Bilbo in the pantry. He wrapped his arms around his hobbit’s waist, and pressed a kiss to the side of his neck. There they were in Bag End, and they had their group of dwarves joining them for another sumptuous supper.

He released his husband, and watched as he lifted the block of blue cheese, and he could never understand why something so disgusting looking was so delicious. He took the cheese, and winked at Bilbo. “Aye. I will tell him, amralime. You know that I believe you, but he is not as cultured at the best of times. You put this over a nice hunk of meat, he’ll eat it.”
Thorin chuckled as his husband continued to rattle on, but smiled and listened, nodding his head at the right times. “I think from what you are telling me, kurduh, is that we do have more than enough food, but if you wish me to, I will go to the market again and get more.”
“What I think is that we have eleven dwarves and a wizard coming to dinner in three days to discuss the quest to go home and I don’t know if we have enough food. Our nephews alone could have cleared out our pantry when they were younger.” Bilbo said, though he did relax a little after Thorin wrapped his arms around him for a bit. “In any case, I’ll go with you to market to get some more food tomorrow morning. As for tonight, we’ll have a tomato and cheese soup with some herbs and bread I baked earlier today. I doubt you got such a nice home cooked meal when you were in Bree.”
The hobbit moved to grab a bowl full of freshly picked tomatoes and a small bundle of basil from the pantry to use to prepare their dinner. “Balin is cultured. But I suppose Dwalin is one of the greatest warriors in the world, other than you, of course, ghivashel. Come. Let us make dinner together.”

He was silent for a few moments before his lips curled slightly. “ It is so strange how you hobbits think. ” The elven king let out, amused at how simple they thought compared to what his own kind and everyone he had met. Intentions, mind set, everything was the opposite. “ Most would like to be remembered but you have a story, whether you like it or not, will be remembered. ”
“My people are simple. We’re not warriors or heroes. We like a quite life and the comforts of home.” He said as he looked up at the elven king. “But then again, I suppose Gandalf was right. I’ve changed. I’m not the same hobbit I was when I left the Shire. Yet I didn’t come out here to make a name for myself, but to help my friends. Still, I must admit it is good to know that I won’t be forgotten.”
Bilbo then reached to hold a beautiful box before the king. “Speaking of being remembered, I believe this belongs to you. I heard these are the heirlooms to your people.”

thorin-thrainson:
“Yes,” he said simply. He looked up at Bilbo in sincerity. “I have always wanted a child of my own but Mahal has…” he hushed his voice, “…he had other plans for me. It is something that I am deeply ashamed of but…I am impotent. After sustaining irreversible damage during my youth, I-…” he cleared his throat and covered Frodo’s ears just in case the boy could hear.
“I am incapable of fathering my own children. That was why my sister, Dis, was encouraged to marry and produce heirs. Which she did and…hmmm…” he trailed off into silence. He didn’t need to say what happened next. Everyone knew how much he loved his nephews as if they were his own.
“What happened to Frodo’s parents?” his voice was small and he tried to change the focus from himself.

“I’m sorry.” A simple reply. But it did not make Bilbo think less of Thorin in the slightest. Although it did clarify a few things for him, including why the dwarf king had never fathered children of his own, leaving his nephews as his heirs.
Bilbo stood up from his arm chair before the fire, coming over to Thorin. Frodo appeared to have fallen into a deep sleep in Thorin’s arms, but that didn’t mean that precaution wasn’t necessary. “You should know that I still love you and I always will. This changes nothing between us. Frodo isn’t our son, but we can raise him as our own. He needs love and a home. We can provide that to him.”
The hobbit kept his voice soft so as not to wake the young one. “There was a boating accident.” He answered. “What caused it, we don’t know. But most of us hobbits do not know how to swim, even if some of us like to go boating on the lakes nearby. His parents drowned. There’s no bodies, no grave, just ruins of the boat that carried them. But speaking of parents, Gandalf sent us a message that I received earlier this evening. He’s coming to see us soon. Apparently he has something to tell you about your father. No doubt he’s finally heard word that you are alive once more.”
Bilbo looked down at Frodo who still lay asleep in Thorin’s arms. “I think we should tuck Frodo into bed. Don’t you?”

Thorin picked up the hobbit boy and looked deep into his blue eyes. The words of his beloved Bilbo sank in. The resemblance was uncanny. Dark hair, bright blue eyes, pale skin and quite the quiet demeanor. His face went flushed.
“….are you….saying…he is….mine?” the dwarf said slowly and full of hope and fear. “Is that even possible?”

He watched Thorin pick up Frodo, examining the little one, who offered the dwarf a sleepy smile. Bilbo sighed, hearing the hope and fear in his lover’s voice. “No. He’s not your’s. You and I…together… we can’t have children. He just sort of looks like you with his dark hair and blue eyes is all. But he isn’t the only one in my family with those features.” Bilbo clarified. “And if he was your’s wouldn’t he have dwarfish features? We’re just going to adopt him. I was thinking of having him call me Uncle Bilbo.”
Thorin flushed even redder at his own assumption and utter stupidity. Of course it was impossible! “Yes…of course…” he cleared his throat and smiled sweetly at the child in his arms, bringing him close and cradling him. “And… perhaps…I can be…Uncle Thorin… though, would that be appropriate? I…I am not in anyway related to him… would that be proper?”

You are his family.” Although he blushed soon after saying that. It had just been so long of Thorin simply being in his house and them being a couple that Bilbo felt at times that they acted like a happily married couple.
Bilbo looked up at him, the blush still on his cheeks. “Do you...that is if we could have had one together.... did you want a child of our own?”

“I think we’re going to need a lot more food.” Bilbo said, looking through the pantry. He pulled out a block of cheese that was blue and held out before Thorin. “Also, tell Dwalin that this isn’t riddled with mold. It’s a blue cheese. It’s supposed to look that way. I got it from the market at the Shire three days ago. Although that makes me think I could make a cheese and tomato soup. I just hope it will be enough.”
