Disclaimer: French people complain a lot. A lot. Don’t be surprised if 90% of these expressions are complaining.

Non mais oh - say this if someone does something mildly annoying and you want to express your shock and distaste.

Tu me fais chier - (alt. tu me fais chier, là.) literally ‘you make me shit’. means you’re pissing me off.

Carrément - translates to ‘squarely’. Means ‘literally’. If someone tells you something surprising or annoying, you can answer simply “ah carrément.” see: tu me fais carrément chier.

J’hallucine / je rêve - are you annoyed by something? say these.

C’est pas possible - a classic. anything bad happens - c’est pas possible. There is no cheese left? It’s not possible. I’m hallucinating. This is a burden on me that solely I can bear I cannot believe this is happening.

Ça commence à me gaver - I’m starting to get real sick of this. see: Ça commence carrément a me gaver là, putain.

T’es relou - verlan slang for ‘lourd’ meaning someone’s heavy, personality-wise. They’re tedious.

Ça me saoûle / ça me gonfle - similar to gaver, means something’s pissing you off, you’re sick of it.

Grave - totally.

C’est clair - totally/that’s clear. Like ‘claro’ in spanish. “Justine elle est trop relou” “C’est clair. Elle me fait chier.”

J’en ai marre - I’m sick of this.

J’en ai ras le bol - I’m sick of this.

J’en ai ras le cul - I’m sick of this (vulgar).

(J’en ai) Rien à battre - I don’t give a damn.

(J’en ai) Rien à foutre - I don’t give a fuck.

C’est bon, là. -  That’s enough.

Perso, euh, - “Personally,” generally used at the start of a complaining sentence, to express how personal the matter is to you. Perso, euh, c’est bon là. J’en ai ras le cul.

Rôh là - general expression of distaste. Le longer the rôh, the more annoyed you are. Rôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôh, c’est quoi ce bordel.

C’est quoi ce bordel ? - translates to “what’s this brothel”, means “what’s this shit?!”

C’est de la merde - It’s shit.

C’est une blague ? - Is this a joke?

Idem - ditto

J’ai la dalle - I’m hungry

Ça caille - It’s freezing

Ouf - two meanings 1. phew or 2. verlan for “fou”, meaning crazy (as a noun or adjective). “Kévin, c’est un ouf! Il fait du vélo sans casque!” “Ouais carrément, c’était un truc de ouf!”

Kévin - there’s a running joke that all the young delinquents seem to be called Kévin.

Crever - slang for “to die”. Va crever, connard!

Connard/Connasse - c*nt, but a lot less vulgar in french peoples eyes

Hey guys, here are some of my favorite channels on youtube for learning French.

Francais avec Pierre  - great channel if you want to know more about grammar rules and expressions, how to sound really French and natural. He also makes videos about the DELF/DALF exams…

Comme une Française  - also very good if you are confused about certain things… you can learn a lot about used expressions and words you would not find in a book

1 jour, 1 question - the main purpose of this channel is to explain things to kids, but in a fun way. It’s animated and short, but it’s great for obtaining a wide range of vocabulary, because the themes go from politics, geography and history to something like animals and food. Also might be good for learning about some history things, and interesting new facts, not just learning French.

Learn French with FrenchPod101.com  - again… grammar, expressions, vocabulary channel

Cyprien - this is the only channel that is just a normal channel, not meant for learning French (but I am sure everyone knows Cyprien anyway). I just really enjoy his videos and it’s very useful for learning new words and of course for some listening practice.

“It’s better to prevent than heal.” This means that it’s better to stop something bad from happening than to fix the damage that it caused. I like this one because of the way that it puts things into perspective. If you can stop something bad, the less people will get hurt,

Petit a petit, l’oiseau fait son nid

“Little by little, the bird makes it’s nest.” This is similar to slowly but surely. The bird is taking it’s time and each little stick it puts into the nest is that much closer to finishing it. I like this one because it tells how good things take time.

Qui n’avance pas, recule

“Who does not move forward, recedes.” Life will go on around us, and you must move with it, or else you are moving back. I like this one because you must move forward, even if it’s hard, or else you’ll be living in the past.

Okay, so you’ve been called smart all your life. As a kid, you were one of the smartest in your class. Maybe you could read at a much higher level than your peers, or you could fly through multiplication drills like they were nothing. Then, you get to high school and suddenly you’re surrounded by lots of people who were ‘gifted kids’. None of what made you ‘special’ seems all that important now. Your work is actually challenging, and it’s actually requiring effort.

If you’re experiencing this, just know that so many students have gone through the same thing. Maybe it happens in high school, maybe college. But a lot of us who were considered gifted as kids suddenly run into this and it challenges our entire identity. It can be paralyzing, but it’s 100% possible to overcome it and succeed! I’ve compiled a few tips for ex-gifted kids dealing with impostor syndrome and self-doubt. I’m not a therapist, psychologist, or any sort of education expert. I’m just speaking to my own experiences, and I welcome any input from others who have insight into this as well!

1. Understand that working hard does not mean you aren’t intelligent. If something doesn’t come naturally to you, that’s not a reason to give up. Believing that people can do things “just because they were born with a talent for it” is only going to hurt you. It’s not true! People may have natural aptitudes for things, but hard work is involved even for the smartest or most talented people. You are capable of learning anything, and you don’t have to be “good at it” right away to do so.

2. Comparison will kill you. You are your only competition. Focusing on how you rank with other students, and comparing yourself to your classmates is going to exhaust you. By focusing on others, you can’t put your full energy into focusing on your work and yourself. You belong. Even if you struggle with your work, you belong. Focus on your own self-improvement and doing your best.

3. Don’t focus on the goal, focus on your current actions. If you’re always thinking about the future, and about whether you’ll get into that school or that program or win that award or get that scholarship, you’re not using that time to get work done. Don’t worry about college applications, just do your homework. Focus on what you are doing now to reach your goals so you can apply to schools with confidence later.

4. Your grades may not reflect intelligence, but they do reflect work ethic. Don’t let others convince you that grades mean nothing. They sure as hell mean a lot to colleges, and thinking that you should “reject the current education system” is not going to harm anyone but yourself. If you don’t feel like you’re learning anything in your high school classes, that’s all the more reason to want to get into a university that will challenge you. If you put effort into your work, it will not let you down. Your hard work will be reflected on your transcript. Don’t lose focus.

5. Talk to someone. Let people know if you’re struggling. It can be hard to feel like you aren’t allowed to identify as “smart” or to feel pressure to constantly compete and improve. I went to a highly competitive high school that pushed kids to cope in dangerous ways. This is not healthy and not okay. If you’re feeling overwhelmed you need to find healthy coping mechanisms. Speak with someone you trust and don’t let yourself spiral. Don’t try to self medicate. Your well being is always more important than your grades. Period.

just write a diary, it has helped me sooo much and i dare say it has been the most developing thing i’ve done while learning french, nothing else compares

1. you’re exposed to the language daily

2. you quickly see which words are missing from your vocabulary

3. you learn to write about the things you think about a lot

4. learning to actually think in your target language

5. having to look up words and when reading the entry back a couple of days later you can’t even remember which words you didn’t know

6. going back to the earlier entries and seeing all the mistakes and knowing how much better you’ve become

7. when you’ve been writing for a few months and your target language becomes a natural way for expressing yourself

8. when you’ve been writing for a few months and you start seeing the diary writing as a way of self-expression and stressrelief, and the language learning aspect becomes natural and secondary

just some thoughts I have after graduating…if more comes to me I’ll make another post but…yeah.

stay on top of your degree requirements: 

no idea about other schools (or even departments within my own university), but my advisor would give some weird information and advice sometimes. once, an entire minor was added to my workload…in a language completely different from what I was studying at the time, and after I had already decided to do something else. don’t rely on others to keep an eye on things for you. write that mess down and refer to it several times during the semester to keep yourself on track.

have your own plan: 

related to the last one, but spend a lot of time figuring out what YOU want from your college experience / future career / later studies, and work towards that. there will be people who try to direct your future and ‘know what’s best for you’, and you could end up wasting a lot of time/money trying to fulfill THEIR goals instead of your own. beat them to the punch and know when to turn something down [or just ignore advice after gracefully receiving it].

but! use your professors wisely: 

I’m not saying to avoid all advice. I got my degree in a field where literally no one in my family has any experience, and it was hard to not feel lost. pick your professors’ brains about their own academic careers, how they went about their degrees, what they would change (or would not), and any suggestions they have. your professors have been in the game for a while, and their networks are extensive. don’t be afraid to tap into that. converse with them about your favorite topics in class, or ideas you have, or projects you would like to complete. they will welcome it.

you won’t have time for everything at the same time: 

be mindful of what you prioritize, and give yourself a break every now and then. even though I was involved in a lot of things on campus, juggled campus jobs, and kept up with my four classes, I couldn’t follow the same routine every single week. some weeks, all I did was study and go to work. other weeks, I dropped my extra study time to go to club meetings and volunteer at events. balance your yes and no, and switch things up to keep the semester feeling fresh [and preventing burnout].
