Since the Hora are beings bereft of elemental power, even the merest traces of it in their souls, Kaitiaki must be equipped with specialized gear. This gear consists of amulets, jewelry, or clothing embedded with fragments of Toa Stones. Such a fragment is called a Power Stone, and once broken, it can be passed down from generation to generation until its power runs out. Upon the arrival of a new generation of Toa, summoned by the Toa Stones, they and their Kaitiaki perform a ritual in which the Toa breaks the Power Stone from their Toa Stone and hands it to their Kaitiaki.

In addition to the stones, a Kaitiaki's gear also includes a mask. The mask is custom-cast with a unique design for its future owner from protodermis and protosteel in a 70:15 ratio, with an admixture of precious metals such as gold, platinum, and so on. The mask acts as a conduit, helping to distribute the uncontrollable power of the elements.

Training in concentration and control of elemental power takes slightly less time than physical training.
