“Thank you,” Christian managed, though still begrudgingly. He still didn’t appreciate that Adelaide seemed to think her idea of “getting along” was so much better than his, but now that they were stuck at this restaurant together he supposed he would rather fight after they ate, at least. He tucked into the menu for a moment, then shifted the conversation. “I’ve never actually had Chicago pizza in Chicago, you know? I’ve just been to a couple places in the south that try to imitate it, I wonder if it’s as good as people say it is. Seems like a lot of sauce to me.”
the change of topic is a welcome opportunity to get her mind off the tension that lingered between her cousin and someone she considered a friend. though some of her frustration lingers, addie follows christian’s lead and focuses on the menu. ‘ oh, you’re kidding ! i’ve never had it either. my parents brought me to chicago once when i was a kid, but we only ate healthy things, ’ she says, punctuating the word healthy with air quotes. ‘ and we only spent like, three days here. so it all feels new. ’ a shrug, and a brief pause as addie finishes perusing the options displayed on the menu. ‘ i bet it’ll be awesome, sauce and all ! the reputation has to come from somewhere, right ? which one are you getting ?--- ooh, we should probably split one. ’
